Still from DV Video is 720x480 (under 1Megapixel)...and a still from digital camera - up to 6Megapixel. Yeah... I would say that is just a little bit different.

In straight measurement of pixels/color depth the digital camera will pretty much always win.

Personally, I'm sick of having to pay for features I don't want, even on top- of- the- range cameras. However, I suppose Sony and co are just pandering to market forces, but my guess is that most buyers end up with both anyway. I mean, who want to lug around a bulky video camera to take still pictures, and end up getting inferior pics in the end? It would be nice if camera manufacturers catered for the enthusiast and the professionals in their up market models and started leaving out all these gimmicks. I guess we can only hope.

When you take your stills with the 6 meg Canon set it for about 2200 x 2200 and then later on you can use them when rendering HDV and you will be astounded at the quality.
