You can capture a still image with the Vegas capture utility and Vegas does have the ability to load a sequence of images as frames as long as they are numbered in a sequence xx001, xx002, etc., so it can be done.
If I remember right, the Workprinter will automate the capture process with certain NLE's? Rather than capture each still by hand, there it will allow the software to do it automatically frame by frame.
Am I right? I know someone who may be doing this with Vegas however I don't know much about the process. I'll see what I can dig up.
I have a Workprinter. I use Scenalyzer to do the capture. It already had stop motion capture, but two years ago I wrote to the author and asked him to make some tweaks so you can add a set delay between when the mouse press is received from the Workprinter and when the capture actually takes place. This eliminates the need to do any adjustments to the Workprinter cam (although I think Roger -- the Workprinter inventor -- changed his design so the timing adjustments are easier). Anyway, Scenalyzer works great. Also, there is a capture program that is designed specifically for Workprinter.
Vegas capture is a very limited application, and does not have any stop motion capture.
What I was thinking of was using the Z1 for the camcorder device to see if
there was any improvement after downconverting. And maybe in the future if the capture could be done in High Def. with the Cineform codec.
I do have the # of a person using Vegas as the capture tool with the workprinter.
There are several versions of the Workprinter. The version that captures one frame at a time (the high-end version) requires a capture capability (stop motion) that doesn't exist in Vegas (unless there is some really clever workaround).
No joke, really. But, I did find it under "Frame-by-Frame" in the capture menu. Thanks for the tip. Now if I can get an external button to simulate the F11 key.
