Hmmm. What exactly are you trying to accomplish? Do you want to do time-lapse animation in Vegas? If you want to just transfer your films straight to DV, then the Video Capture utility that is included with Vegas will do the job nicely and you won't need the stop-motion feature at all. You will want to use a video camera with an adjustable shutter speed and set it for the lowest speed you can get (1/60th or slower) to cut down on flickering. It's also very helpful if your movie projector has an adjustable speed.

On the other hand, if you do want to do stop-motion, time lapse, frame at a time captures, you'll need some other software. Sonic Foundry's video capture software doesn't have this feature ... yet.

I have a Canon GL-1 that I used to record the projected image. I set the shutter speed at 1/60, but when I recorded the projected image, I still ended up with quite a bit of flicker. I'm using a GAF projector that does not have an adjustable frame speed. I came across this Workprinter and am intrigued. It works by capturing, via stop motion, each frame of the film. Thus, when you play back the project you can set the speed in Vegas to match the original fps speed. The result is flicker free DV from 8mm or S8 film. The entire process is automated via a special PS2-mouse and according to the inventor, a 3 inch reel (50 ft) takes about 10 minutes to transfer.

For someone with a fair amount of film to transfer, the unit would not take long to pay for itself. I was told to use Premiere with Studio DV but as I've never used either I am unsure as to whether both are actually necessary.

Thanks for your help.

Buy ScenalyzerLive; it'll capture stop-motion. I've got some funny issues with it and my Sony DVMC-DA2, though, related to capture. I think even with transport control options disabled the app still trips over the fact that the box a simple converter and not a full deck. The author hasn't been able to diagnose the issue yet since he doesn't have the hardware. So your mileage with your hardware may vary, but the app itself is great otherwise and indeed does s-m capture.

Chewbonkay: Have you found anything other than Premier that will do stop motion single frame captures? I've looked at the ScenalyzerLive site, but it doesn't sound to me like their method of doing time lapse uses the real-time single frame capture that is needed for a WorkPrinter.

Not yet <g> maybe in a future release...no promises.

I think you're right. I've backed off of the Workprinter temporarily (due to lack of time to investiage mostly), but from what I can tell those using if effectively are using Premiere. I checked out Scenalyzer and I don't think it'll work. The developper of the WP was quick to point out that time lapse and stock motion are NOT the same thing. If I'm not mistaken, Scenalyzer seems more about time lapse.

OK, no promises, but if you do consider it ....

It should allow either interval captures, or capture on event (mouse click, space bar, even external through the game/midi or serial ports), and the final frame rate should be specifiable. Even a capture on scene change or motion detection (and then wait a user specified interval before checking again) would be nifty and probably not too difficult to implement.

Heck, these features would make VideoCapture something i'd even pay for!

Thanks for considering :)

I heard someone say that not only does Premiere have 'stop motion' capturing, but it can overlay the current dv signal over your previous captured frame, so you can line up your next shot or pose your animated figure perfectly. it sounds amazingly cool, but I haven't tried it yet so...

There is another software package called Stop Motion Pro (www.stopmotionpro.com)
that will do stop motion capturing. Sounds good but more expensive than
ScenalyzerLive. Anyone have any experience with it?
