Strange but repeatable SD render problem.

diverG wrote on 7/1/2011, 9:56 AM
Simple SD timeline (22min) using PAL.avi files. After editing I cannot render to avi so as to write back to tape. The render crashes at random times and never completes.
I can render out .ac3 & mpeg2 files to create a DVD (never a problem). By chance I found that if I render to .ac3 or mpeg2 and then render to .avi, the avi render always completes. Over the last month or so I have rendered the project this many times and the problem and work around are entirely repeatable.

I put this problem to support together with the necessary files. Support confirmed that the project rendered out fine on their machine but no further help was forthcoming.

CPU useage 100% whilst rendering and core temeratures OK.
Any bright ideas as to what might be causing this problem.

What "kind" of PAL AVI files?
Use MediaInfo and post the details.

Are you rendering to uncompressed or a standard DV type .avi when this occurs?
Many times this problem can be traced to bits of media that Vegas just doesn't like,
but you mentioned crashing at random times. You might try reloading the DV codec in case that may be corrupted (or reload Vegas itself). What version of Vegas are you on? Does another SD project render completely?

Sorry, posted msg before yours appeared.
Do try reinstalling Vegas...might do the trick.

Hi Ken
DV is captured via 'firewire' directlty from the camcorder or via a sony deck.Vegas, dropped on the timeline and editted.
Render template is default =PAL DV Widescreen. The same one I've used thro VP8 & 9. I have a fall back position with XP but I would like to sort out the W7 VP10 setup

Machine is dual booted with project & files on an intermediate drive. If I boot into XP and pick up the project it renders fine in VP10. Never a problem.

I've clean reinstalled W7 & VP10 and the problem persists. I normally work with HDV (tape based) with .m2t files and have no problems whatsoever. Looks like a quirk with .avi on this pc. In view of the clean install i have no other DV projects available immediately.

Geoff

Edit:
Looks like the avi files are corrupted. Re-captured via Sony A1 (set to DV) and the resulting files render with no problems. Also cleaned all the dust of the proccessor cooling fan and dropped the 'render' temp by 10 degC.

Can put this one to bed now.
