strange circumstance with selecting clips & groups

i am more an audio guy and i can do this in most audio software, so i'm hoping it is also possible in vegas.

i have a 10 minute piece with many video clips.

it is a music performance, so the music is often consistent, while i move video clips around (i.e. shot of guitar, then shot of crowd, but you still hear the guitar)

i got to the point where the video was basically done.

but i now realize i can cut out a minute of the piece.

so i cut that minute out, hoping i could grab all the clip to the right, and move them over to attach them to the clips on the left, removing the blank space i created when deleting the 1 minute of unnecessary footage.

for example, in the ten minute piece, you take away minute 4, and merge minutes 1-3 with minutes 5-10 to get a 9 minute piece.

ok,, now, i think the best way to move them over is select all the relevant clips and group them, so i can easily slide them over.

but that's not so easy because of the insane amount of clips i have.

many of them are tiny clips sitting on top of other clips, etc.

it's very possible i wouldn't find them all.

is there a way to just select all the clips starting at a certain point??

i realize i can select all, but how about selecting all, starting at minute 5?

i also realize i could just render the whole thing and then cut out the unwanted minute of material, but then i wouldn't have the various clips to work with, when merging the two sections.

and i need to drag them out to create a fade in/out experience in the video, but not the audio.

that would be impossible if i render it out first.

so rendering is not an option.

besides, i want to learn how to select an entire area of clips because it will be necessary more often.

in my audio software all i have to is hold down the ALT key and drag over the clips i want to select.

vegas doesn't seem to do that with ALT or DEL.

i can make it LOOK like it's selected...because the area turns a dark color, but then i can't right click and create a group...thus it is not actually selecting the clips.

i hope this is clear.

thanx in advance, this forum is great!

It should not be necessary to group all those clips. If you activate the "Auto Ripple" command .. it *should* do just what you want.

You didn't say which version of Vegas you had.

There is an icon at the top of the screen with a down arrow next to it. The down arrow selects which of the three options apply when you activate the Auto Ripple command.

The three options are:
Affected tracks
Affected tracks, marker and regions
All tracks, markers and regions

I would think the first would work for you in this circumstance, but maybe the second one might be better .. OR the third option. Try them all and see. You can always use the "undo" command.

When the Auto Ripple command is active when you delete a clip (or multiple clips at one time) all the remaining clips afterward will automatically slide over to remove the empty space.

Have you experimented with Vegas' autoripple function? Hit CTRL+L to locate and/or activate the button. Good luck.

There's also a button called "selection edit tool". Activate it, and your arrow will behave the way you described your audio software.
