Strange event in Vegas 5

I've been using Vegas since 3 (have 6 on the way). I had a strange event today that I cannot explain and have never seen before and wonder if anyone else has seen it. Using Vegas 5, I was working on a show that had some background music. I use a program called DC 5 for my default audio editor because it has some virtual valve settings to add a tube sound to the audio. I right click on the audio track and select "Open a Copy in DC5". An error message pops up and says something to the effect that I must stop playing the audio in Vegas before I can open it the sound editor. But, the audio wasn't playing. I tried several times and got the same error. I changed my default editor back to Sound Forge and tried to open a copy with Sound Forge and got the same error. I finally closed Vegas and opened the wav file directly in DC5. I processed, added the tube sound of a 12AX7 and resaved the file. I reopened Vegas and added the new file to the time line. Right clicking and selecting Open a copy in Sound Forge worked this time. I changed the default back to DC 5 and it also worked. I then tried the original file that would not work before and this time it opened in both DC5 and Sound Forge. Any ideas on what could cause this or you think it was just one of those Windows things that we never understand? I hate odd events like this that I can't explain because you never know when it will happen with the money looking over your shoulder.
