Strange Firewire Problem

I am having trouble getting my Firewire network to recognize my Sony TRV 900. This is a problem that has been intermittent but today it looks very permanent. Here are the basic facts:

1. I have a Maxtor 1 Touch 250 GB, an ADVC-100 and the Sony TRV-900 connected via Firewire to my 1.9 GHz XP Pro machine. The Firewire card is an ADS Pyro.

2. The normal configuration is the Maxtor 250 connected and turned on, the ADVC-100 connected but not turned on and the TRV-900 not connected at bootup.

3. The Maxtor never fails to come up OK under this condition.

4. The ADVC-100 never fails to come up under the normal boot up.

5. Turning on the TRV-900 after the normal boot up fails often and normally hangs the Maxtor 250 GB drive. It becomes inaccessible.

6. Booting with the Maxtor 250 off allows the TRV-900 and the ADVC-100 to come up OK. This is not a cable problem. If I turn on the Maxtor 250 after the TRV-900 connect it is not accessible by the system.

7. Connecting the TRV 900 to the ADS Pyro or the Maxtor 250 does not change the symptoms.

So I seem to have some sort of conflict between the TRV 900 and the Maxtor 250 GB drive. I am stumped on this. I have been solving it in the past by re-booting and crossing my fingers. That has worked until today but today it is failing.

Any inputs would be greatly appreciated.

I did a little more searching on my TRV 900-Firewire problem and came across the following at the puremotion website:

Anyone who has been having problems with erratic recognition of IEEE 1394 (Firewire) devices connected to Windows XP PC's, when multiple such devices are connected, will be interested in the link shown below. I happened across this at the Microsoft support site. Note that this page includes links to both a descriptive write-up and a patch. The patch is preliminary, and is intended ultimately for inclusion in SP2 whenever that may be released.

I tried this patch, and it did indeed solve some relatively minor but annoying problems I was having involving loss of recognition in XP of my Firewire hard drive, associated with use of my DV camcorder on the same Firewire bus. The only (very minor) side effect of the patch which I noticed was that when a Firewire device is connected, a few additional seconds are required before XP recognizes it. The patch id is Q329256.

This is exactly my problem so I installed the Microsoft patch and it seems to work although it takes at least 30 seconds for my system to see the TRV 900. Also this may be a solution for Sony cameras only. Not sure.
