Stream attributes cannot be determined

Newbie. XP SP3. Sony Vegas Movie Studio 9.0.
Years ago I captured video clips from an analog recorder using a device called "DazzleMe" in .avi format with (ironically) Sonic Foundry Video Factory. Stored them to CD's. Now copying them from CD's back to HDD using 'import media" menu item. When I drag the clip from the media window to the timeline, the audio track transfers but the video track does not. Single clicking the .avi file in the media window (explorer tab), audio track info is provided, video track info says: "Stream attributes could not be determined". The .avi files play nicely in Windows Media Player, QuickTime, PowerDVD, etc.. How can I get the .avi video track into the timeline so I can create a movie?
Many thanks!

Download MediaInfo and post the complete file attributes.
I suspect you may have to download an MJPEG codec.

Can you upload a clip somewhere (Mediafire)? Or are they all too large?

You may need a YUY2 VFW Codec.
I honestly don't know what's out there or what might already be installed on your machine that isn't working. Some "free" codecs contain malware.

Can you install your Dazzle hardware and software on your newer machine? It might give you the codec you need.

Here are some other things you can try:
The files "should" open in VirtualDub (freeware) and convert to something Vegas can handle.
The Vegas Pro trial version "might" open the files with one of its YUV codecs.
The Helix YUV codec has a good reputation. They come preinstalled in Vegas Pro, don't know about your version. http://www.lillevold.com/files/yuvcodecs-1.2.exe

Be sure to set a restore point before messing around with new codecs.
Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

If i dub it in virtual dub and save it as .avi, then it works. That will work for now, but I will try some of the other ideas too. You were most helpful - thanks!

Glad you found a workaround!
