Stretch Event vs Playback rate

A customer has asked me to slow down some captured film sequences.

Usually I do this by CTRL and grabbing the end of the event to pull it out to the desired length.

If I look at Properties of an event, I can set a playback rate there, but it does not affect the length of the event on the timeline. Are these equivalent ways of stretching an event?

Mostly, yes. The only difference is that when you Ctrl-stretch you're adjusting the length at the same time, whereas with the playback rate you have to then manually adjust the event length afterwards.

Also, using the Velocity envelope will allow you to adjust more "on the fly" without having to keep opening up clip properties.

Thanks for the inputs, I almost caused myself some significant extra work by misusing the properties approach.

Also, the velocity envelope - duh - why didn't I think of that before for stretching an event

If you need to slow down the audio with the video then velocity envelopes won't help you. The affect only video.
