Before i start here is my system:
Vegas Movie Studio Platinum_Version 9.0b (Build 92)

Windows Vista Home Premium 32bit_SP2
Intel i7 2.67Ghz
6GB_RAM
3x 500 GB HDD 7200rpm

and some extra info:

SVS Customer Service -
"Vegas Movie Studio is a 32-bit application and will only have access to 2GB of RAM to perform all of it's different operations."

PROBLEM:
Almost every time during my render SVS9:
- abruptly shuts down
- Error messages (From SVS9: An Error Occured During Operation.
an Exception Has Occurred. From VISTA: program stopped functioning / ""stopped functioning properly)
- Crash

*The ONLY time it has allowed me to render properly is if the video is extremely short (ie less then 25 seconds or so)

1 of the Error Messages i was able to copy:

Reset application:

SVS Customer Service -
"Close the program. Now press CTRL+SHIFT while double-clicking on the program's icon to launch it. Continue to hold the CTRL & SHIFT keys until the program is fully up and loaded.

In newer programs, you will see a window that asks "Do you want to reset all preferences to default values?" Place a checkmark next to "Delete all cached application data" and then click Yes.

Next, Please disable Startup applications and Background Services. To disable these items from starting, you can go to the Start menu and select Run. Then type msconfig into the field provided and press Enter or OK. In Windows Vista, there is a field at the bottom of the Start menu that you can type directly into.

Open the Startup tab, press the “Disable All” button and then Apply. Then go into the Services Tab, check the box next to “Hide All Microsoft Services” at the bottom of the window and choose Disable All. Then press Apply and OK and reboot the computer.

** Note: This measure is for testing purposes. If you are disabling these services, none of these services are critical for your computer to start or function. We recommend this troubleshooting step to remove as many variables from the problem as possible; though you may also be disabling desired services like anti-virus or portable device recognition services like iPod Service, etc. If this solves your issue, you may want to repeat the steps above to open the MSCONFIG dialog so that you can re-enable most of these services. You may want to spend some time re-enabling these one at a time until you find the culprit. Most likely there are just one or two services that are causing the conflict."

"Purge unused media to help free up resources. You can purge unused media from your Vegas Project in the Project Media Window. To do this go to the tab in the Vegas window that says Project Media. In the top left corner of this window, you will see a button that looks like a lightning bolt. Clicking on that will remove any unused media from your project and help to free up system resources.

Try breaking your project into pieces by saving the project as a number of sections. For example if your timeline is 30 minutes long, save three ten minute sections into three Vegas files using File > Save As. In each different project delete the other parts. After you have broken up your project, use the instructions above remove unused media. Edit each section separately, render and re-import into a new project to stitch them together into a final audio and video stream.

This workflow has provided many customers with complex projects that are processor intensive the ability to render their projects. Please utilize the workflow defined above to produce your render. If you still have a follow-up question on this particular incident, please feel free to update it. If you have a completely different question, please create a new incident."

Suggestions to help free up your resources:

"Match Project Properties to your source media
If your project’s Properties (dimensions, aspect ratio, frame rate, etc.) are different than that of your source media files, Vegas has to do additional processing to convert it in real time. To set your Project Properties, go to File (or Project) > Properties. Select the Template that corresponds to your source media, for example, HDV 1080-60i. If you aren’t sure which Template to select, hit the Match Media Settings button (with the folder icon) in the upper-right corner of the Properties dialog. Navigate to one of your source video files and hit Open. This selects the appropriate Template for you. Hit Apply and OK."

Clean installation of the software:

SVS Customer Service -
"Please follow these instructions, making sure to pay close attention when working in the registry and when ending processes. Performing these steps will result in all presets and transitions you may have saved being wiped clean, so you will want to back these up beforehand using our Preset Manager program. This is available free of charge from our website at http://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/download/step2.asp?DID=469

First, safely disconnect any any external USB or Firewire devices like hard-drives or dongles.

Please go to Start > Control Panel and open the Add/Remove Programs control panel. (In Windows Vista, click Start and then type "Programs and Features" in the Start Search box. In the Programs list, click Programs and Features).

Remove anything with a name containing Sony ACID, Sony Sound Forge, Sony Vegas, Sony DVD Architect, Sony CD Architect or Sony Media Manager, as well as any other Sony Creative Software programs.

Also, remove the Microsoft SQL Server Desktop Engine, any Microsoft .NET Framework versions, and the Microsoft C++ 2005 Redistributable software if it is listed.

Close the Control Panel and go to My Computer. Open the C:\ drive and open the Program Files folder. In this folder, if you see the Sony Setup folder, please delete the entire folder along with any of its contents.

If you have a Sony folder remaining in Program Files, please open this as well. If there are any folders corresponding to a Sony Creative Software or Sony Media Software program, such as ACID, Vegas, DVD Architect, Media Manager, Shared Plug-Ins, or any of our software you may have installed, please remove these folders. If these are the only folders in C:\Program Files\Sony, please remove the enitre Sony Folder.

Disable everything under Services and Startup in the System Configuration Utility. Do this by going to Start > Run, then type MSCONFIG (in Windows Vista, click Start and then type MSCONFIG in the Start Search box). Click the Services tab, checkmark Hide All Microsoft Services. Now click Disable All and Apply. Now click the Startup tab and click Disable All. Click Apply and Close. Choose to restart the computer.

Once again, go to Start > Run and type REGEDIT. This will take you into the Registry Editor.

**Before making changes to your registry, we advise that you save a backup. If you are unfamiliar with this operation you may want to contact your IT personal or take a look at this article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/322756 - How to back up and restore the registry in Windows XP and Windows Vista**

Locate the following keys and delete them:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Sonic Foundry
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Sony Media Software
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Sony Creative Software

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Sonic Foundry
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Sony Media Software
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Sony Creative Software

Now download the latest update for your software. You can find the latest update for any program at http://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/updates
When this has finished downloading, please install the software directly from these downloaded updates and not from any previous updates or discs you may have.

When finished with all reinstallation, please restart your computer. When your computer has restarted, your software will have a complete clean installation. If your software still does not work correctly at this point, it is possible that this problem is related to your system and it might be above our ability to assist. In this situation, we would recommend contacting the computer manufacturer or distributor for further support."

Now i have, what used to be a edited 4:27 clip, chopped up into 12 variable length clips, which only 3 can be rendered properly because of its short length. As for processing, im using Level, Color Correction and Brightness and Contrast. Everyday it gets worst, sometimes i have to restart my computer 3x or more in order for SVS9 to render a 20 or 30 second clip, its like a slot machine.

I am currently going back and forth with Customer Service.

please help,

thank you.

First - I don't have VMS9 so I'm not aware of specific issues with VMS9 & please consider these as just general troubleshooting ideas/questions:

1. Is your computer custom-built? If so, do you have any issues with any other applications?
2. You may want to post your system specs in your profile, especially missing is your graphics card info
3. What is the input to VMS9? Are they clips you captured? If so, what is the source?
4. Try different source, such as any samples provided by Sony
5. Try a sample project without any effects - just simply place a few clips end-to-end and render
6. Which format are you rendering to? From the stack below, it might be Windows Media. Are you using a default template, or custom settings? If it's one specific format that causes grief, try another one.
7. To follow-up with SCS, send them the smallest project that you can along with input media and see if they can duplicate the problem with your data. If not, then it's something on/about your system and/or installation

Answering some/all of the above questions might get you closer to understanding the problem. Good luck!

I have a similar problem, and am running a similar system (Intel i7 920 with 6Gb of DDR3 RAM, and two 750Gb HDDs, but using both XP 32 bit and Vista 64 bit operating systems on a dual boot arrangement). Capture and editing are fine on both systems, but "make movie" only seems to work on some output formats.

I shoot video in 1440 x 1080i x 25p and edit in AVCHD. I have no problems with the speed of editing. However, my Vegas Movie Studio Platinum 9.0b (build 92) crashes after a few seconds of attempting to create an .m2ts file or even a high definiton MPEG-2 file. This occurs with both my Vista 64 bit and XP 32 bit operating systems.

It will allow me to complete "make movie" using one of the standard definition formats (the widescreen PAL DVD format). It will also allow me to pre-render the AVCHD video on the timeline - but will then crash on attempting to create an AVCHD file.

Any ideas anyone?

Ray

goforit,

In your case I would try suggestions #5 and #7 above. And to avoid getting confused between the OP's problems and yours, it would be better to start a new thread.
FrankT wrote on 8/31/2009, 7:25 PM
I had the same problem and I changed the number of threads in the Options->Preferences->Video tab to 1. I was finally able to render a 10 minute video without a crash. I've read on different forums that Sony does a really poor job of managing memory. Worth a shot.

hey Himanshu,

1. my computer is custom build and this is the first software to give me a problem.
2. Graphics Card: NVIDIA_GeForce_8400_GS
3. I have a Canon VIXIA HF100 camera. i plug the camera to my comp via USB and use a software called "ImageMixer 3 SE" (this came with the camera) to save all of the files, once all of the clips have been transferred to the directory of my choice, i open up VMS9 and edit. The files are .M2TS files.
4. i just tried using the windows sample video's and they seem to render with no problems!
5. this method did not work
6. im trying to render in any format that allows me to upload my video's to youtube. MP4, WMV, or MPG2
7. ive sent them a .VF file and also they asked me for one of the clips but due to legal issues and files being too large i can not send it to them.

Thanks!

im currently re-uploading all of the .m2ts files and replacing them...

thanks for the suggestion! but ive tried it and still no luck.

I was having the problem with Sony Vegas crashing when I tried to Render and that tip about changing the Options worked for me - thanks for that.
Himanshu wrote on 9/1/2009, 6:12 PM
OK, so we have more to go by - it seems the problem is related to your input media and the choice of output formats.

First, I've seen seen several posts about M2TS files creating a problem for Vegas and VMS, so I would try to read up on those.

To systematically isolate the problem, try to download or capture clips from other sources and use the same effects/transitions that you want to use on your clips and check if the render completes. If it does, the issue is with the input clips.

If it does not, then investigate the choice of output format. Ignore that you want to render to YouTube - just make sure you have an end-to-end workflow in VMS first. Once you get a complete render, put your clips and render again. If that causes a problem, then you know the issue with your captured clips.

Once you can render to any format with your input clips, change the output format to what you really need. Now is there a problem?

Since you have the camera, maybe you can just capture new video and use that to send to SCS to avoid copyright issues. If they can reproduce the problem, then they can do something about it...if not, well, then you have to deal with guesses like mine!

Good luck.

For those of you who are having crashes, you might want to read this post:

http://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/forums/ShowMessage.asp?ForumID=4&MessageID=650217

It's for the pro version but some folks are saying it works for the platinum version too. I've done this on my movie studio 9.0b buld and have not had any problems rendering avchd clips. Wanted to pass this along in case it helps someone else. Be sure to read the entire thread!
Himanshu wrote on 9/2/2009, 6:39 PM
Hi Frank,

Your earlier suggestion about the number of rendering thread was a good one - I haven't had the need to change the default, but it does help in some configurations.

As far the 3GB/LargeAddressAware switch thread that you pointed to, that would help *if* the issue was that the application was running out of 2GB memory available to a 32-bit application. In the case where even a few clips are causing a crash leads me to believe (and only the OP can confirm) that this may not help. BTW, this "hack" can be used with *any* 32-bit application that may be running out of the allotted 2GB memory space, not just Vegas/VMS.

Support for AVC is incomplete in Movie Studio Platinum 9b.

Your files are possibly decoded by the Quicktime 32 bit library,
Only 7.6.2 and earlier versions of Quicktime are stable in MS 9.
Quicktime 7.6.4 and 7.7.x are not stable, as MS 9 had already reached the end of active development.
You can find download links for old quicktime and iTunes versions here:
https://support.apple.com/downloads/quicktime
https://support.apple.com/downloads/itunes

Just a note, MS 13 is working fine on Windows 7 and beyond, and handles AVC just fine.
Since your i7 will easily run 64 bit OS, why aren't you there?
