am i right? a sub clip does not give me a trimmed clip on my harddrive....its only a VV reference....so do i have to render a portion of a longer clip just to work with a small piece in other apps?

Correct. Vegas works with "metadata", which can be thought of as control information that tells the rendering engine how to access, interpret, and manipulate the original clip. The work you do in Vegas is non-destructive, and the original clip is untouched.

If you need to extract a small portion of your video for use by other apps, I suggest an AVI using the NTSC template (the 2nd choice in the drop-down menu in VV6). Uncompressed and lossless but still of reasonable size. Fully uncompressed AVI files (the 1st choice in the template menu) seem to come out huge.
