Subject in color, Background B&W

Does anyone know how make an object appear in color and the rest of the video in black and White. Is there a way to do it other than creating masks and keying every frame. I can't think of another way to do it. Saw it done on live TV and it blew my mind - maybe it wasn't live after all! I'm using Vegas 6.

One way is to shoot the subject against a greeenscreen and composite him or her with the background on a separate track.

For other cases, auto-tracking is used in applications like Combustion or Digital Fusion (After Effects can also be used, but its tracking isn't as good).

There are DOZENS of posts about this. A search will turn up all sorts of ways to do this. Most of them involved the secondary color corrector. These other posts will also refer you to tutorials over at jetdv's site. There may be other tutorials as well.
