It's all there - try again - under Help I put in "subtitles", clicked on list topics and got 36 results.

Thank you very much Peter Wright

But alas, I tried it again and again and could find nothing.

Here are the results for the keyword subtitle
http://yueigo.epc.yamaguchi-u.ac.jp/temp/sub.jpg

and when I search for subtitle I get nothing at all.

The above is for Sony DVD Architect 4.5 Trial, English version.

I can create subtitles (.sub and .str files) using the free software Subtitle Workshop.

If I can't create these files using DVDA then can I import them into vegas? Or do I have to use free sotware, Virtual Dub? Virtual Dub will import and combine .ssa subtitle files apparently.

Tim

One important fact you didn't mention - you have the DVDA Studio version, a restricted version of DVDA. I'm not sure, but this possibly does not have the ability to include subtitles.

I think the full version of DVDArchitect also has a trial version - this can definitely import .sub or .txt files into DVDA. Other ways to create subtitles include creating them inside DVDA, or to create regions in Vegas, named with the text required, then exporting and importing to DVDA.

That is correct. The Studio version does not do subtitles.

Dear Peter Wright

Thank you for getting back to me again. I did not grasp the significance of "Studio.." Thank you for pointing that out.

I should have access to DVDA non-studio but I can't find the disk right now. I will download a trial version.

But anyway, I want to publish on the web, not to DVD and DVDA (at least DVDA Studio) only creates DVD's not other types of video file. I guess that stands to reason.

There is a VASST script that will import .sub files as regions in the vegas file but I can't really see the point of that. The regions can be output as a .sub file again, but since I don't want to make a DVD there would be no point in that.

Virtual Dub, and the subtitler filter will merge a .ssa file into an avi. So if I produce an .ssa file using Subtitle Workshop, I can create an avi using Virtual Dub. But it is looking like this is not possible in Vegas.

I have downloaded the Pro trial version of DVDA.

Yes it has subtitling capability. It will not allow me to add subtitles to a video file but it would allow me to add subtitles to a DVD. Unfortunately at the moment the option to add a subtitle track is greyed out.

Meanwhile I am thinking of using Debug Mode Wax to convert the dirtual dub pluging to vegas use but while the wex plugins appear, the virtual dub plugin does not.

Please be clear about this - DVDA exists for one reason - to author DVDs. That's all it does.

To add captions to video, Vegas can be used for superimposing text over video, but as far as I'm aware, it can't import .sub files for this - it sounds as if you already have software more suitable.

Dear Mr. Peter Wright

Thanks again, and for making that clear.

I can't get Virtual Dub to work quite, nor can I get the Virtualdub plugin (or Wax in general) to work with Vegas so, alas I do not have software to put subtitles on video files.

One option is to copy/paste each subtitle from your sub file, or a text file, into text events in Vegas, then rendering to whatever you need - it means a more manual propcess, though.
