Subtitle track causes data format corruption?

I've got a single 90 minute movie with 30 or 40 discreet segments. I've created a simple DVD with a few scene selection menus whose buttons play a selection of this movie and then return to the menu. Right now I have 34 buttons that link to different selections of the movie, and all works well. But when I paste the 35th button and save the project, upon re-loading I get this error message: "Data corruption format found during read".

As best I can determine, it's the movie's subtitle track that pushes the thing over the edge. Each time I copy & paste a button I'm also copying this subtitle track. If I paste the 35th button and delete its subtitle track, the file saves & re-loads without error. In fact, I can paste many buttons as long as I delete their subtitle tracks.

I've also found some weirdness if I slightly alter a subtitle text event in one of the selections---occasionally, I get the data corruption message.

This is a distressing problem, because the file appears to be OK until I re-open it---only to find out it's toast. Any thoughts?
