drop your video into the time line. look at your generated media tab and you'll see text. There are different kinds - some you can see through - some you cant. Drop this on the line above your video - click on the little icon on the right side, put your text in. You can position it like a typewriter (with spaces) or by using pan crop . Just remember to stay in the "safe" zone. that is to leave some room from the edge so you dont cut off your text when you try to view it on your TV

The ones with a gray checkerboard background are the ones that you can see through -- i.e. your text will appear right on top of your video (as long as your text is on a track *above* your video track).

In general, the gray checkerboard pattern is used to indicate transparency.
