Subtitles too "complex"

whe I try to render my DVD, it says a bunch of times for different movies that:

'movie title' contains a subtitle event on subtitle track 1 starting at time 00:??:??:?? that is too complex due to one or more horizontal lines.

What does this mean and how do I fix it?

Too much text and/or too many text attributes (bold, shadow, etc.). There seem to be limits on what you can and cannot do with subtitles imposed by the DVD specificiations. Try reducing the text, e.g. by splitting one subtitle into two and watch the width of the text lines.
