Suggested Audio Improvements to Vegas

I may be a bit crazy to post this... but seeing as we have a few people on here moaning about lack of features, I guess it 'could' be useful to Sony if we at least gave them a list of audio features we'd like to see added/changed to Vegas. After we've compiled a list I'd be happy to email it to them, although I'm sure some people from Sony will see this.

Please, if we can keep them realistic and not too massive we'll have a better chance of getting them added. Vegas isn't Nuendo or Pro Tools, and I wouldn't want it to be, so just quick to implement or important things would be great.

From me:

Ability to set the default plug-ins when creating new tracks. Every time i add a track i delete the Sony ones and replace them with my preferred plugs. This could also be used for video tracks too and would be super easy to implement.

Ability to hide/organise tracks better, possibly including track folders. Better track 'colouring', currently there aren't enough colours and it's fiddly to change them (why can't you just right click the colour?)

Track freezing, or something similar to rein in CPU usage.

Deletable automation 'nodes' using the right mouse button or something. It's far too fiddly to right click and select delete masses of nodes. Maybe treat nodes more like audio or video events, ie. selectable.

Automatable pitch/speed/length on wavs. I can control/drag the total length of a wav, but can't vary it throughout. For this i have to copy into soundforge or use the vibrato plug (which is a crap way of doing it).

If it's easy to do, steal Acid's midi functionality.

Alternatively, whacky idea.... can't Sony just integrate Soundforge, Vegas and Acid into one super program and charge twice the price. Jeez, i know i would get it. Look at Adobe Audition 3. But that's a different thread I think....

Some of these can be done already.

"Ability to set the default plug-ins when creating new tracks. Every time i add a track i delete the Sony ones and replace them with my preferred plugs. This could also be used for video tracks too and would be super easy to implement."

This is described in the manual and help file in the section entitled "Setting Default Track Properties". Put simply, you configure a track so that its characteristics are those you would like to use as the default for any new tracks, then right-click on the track header and choose "Set Default Track Properties...", then tick the boxes whose defaults you want to change (in this case the "TrackFX" box) and click OK to make the current track settings the default from now on.

(You can undo the changes and restore the original defaults using the "Restore original defaults" box if you change your mind about the default settings later.)

"Deletable automation 'nodes' using the right mouse button or something. It's far too fiddly to right click and select delete masses of nodes. Maybe treat nodes more like audio or video events, ie. selectable."

This can be done easily using the Envelope Edit Tool. (When you select the EET instead of the "Normal Edit Tool" you can only select envelope points.) With the EET selected, just drag to create a selection area containing the envelope points you wish to delete and then just choose Delete, either by right clicking and choosing from the menu or just by pressing the DEL key.

thanks for the heads up on the default track thing. That makes a big difference to me :)

As for the the automation, I guess my problem is that I don't like constantly switching tools. If you hold shift while in 'normal' tool it allows you to easily add nodes, allowing shift right click to delete would make sense to me...

D is the default hotkey for toggling tools.

I would love to see enhancements to the way plug ins are implimented:
1) I would like to be able to copy/paste effects chains
2) I would like to be able to 'render in place' a clip, applying all effects to a new file that replaces the original.
3) track consolidate

Its a lot of clicks to save preset chains and reload them, also that folder is getting full of presets I only need temporarily.
In high track count mixes with heavy DSP plug ins it's a work flow interruption to null faders, set pans, define render name and location, then replace the old clip with the new one. I think ProTools LE has this feature as well as track consolidation.

Jesse-

"Apply FX to item as a new take"

That WOULD be great!
