Suggested format for playing on variety of devices

Most of me media is family or holiday content and while archived as originally captured I am wondering what is the ideal delivery for casual playback in varied locations. eg DVD is not as universal as once. what is the current thinking on size v quality?

For that type of content, I decided some time back to standardise on .mp4 h264. I usually render using MC at 24/20 mb/s.
