Suggested PC Configuration

I am trying despertly to get into the audio recording field, mainly I am trying to record a decent demo for my band. I have currently have Vegas Audio 2.0 but I continue to have some problems with the software, or my pc I should say. frequently it seems that my pc skips during recording. I have noticed that my clock in the lower left hand corner of my pc also slows down. The only other problem I have had is twice my machine has rebooted during the middle of recording.

My current computer system is a 400mhz AMD K6-3 with 256 PC-100 RAM (2 sticks 64meg, 1 of 128. I have a 20gig HD, and a 40gig HD, both are 7200rpm, and ATA 66. I keep them Defragged at least once a week. My OS is win98 SE. The only hardware in my pc is, 16meg RIVA TNT AGP Card, my NIC, and Delta 44 PCI 4x4 card. of course floppy, and cdrom. Is this pc sufficent enough to handle what I am doing, and are there any suggested tweaks I should do to my machine to help recording?

The reason I wondering this, because I am contemplating giving up recording with my pc, and trying a DAT machine. Also what is my are advantages of PC recording to Hardware (DAT, etc..)

thanks,
Marrell

Chech out this site for pc tweeking www.geocities.com/pcoptimisation

They have some step by step recomendations to ensure that your pc isn't busy doing other stuff when it should be paying attention to the fact that you're trying to record music!
Hope that helps, I'm rather frustrated myself so I won't address the second part of your queiry.

Very informative web page. Any additional information/web page available for maximizing your system (video vs audio)??

you most certainly got this from the other page but, check out www.98lite.net. I'm still an infant so I can't fully vouch for it but, I have used it and it does what it claims. I just have too many variables in my own system (mostly personal ignorance)to truley preach thier gospel.
Hope that helps.

That's an interesting page, and I certainly understand configuring a PC for maximum performance. Keep in mind that modifying the OS in such ways can sometimes break software, including ours. For instance, we require IE's html engine for our in-program help. If you remove IE, you'll be getting rid of help too. Please check our system requirements for info on what we have to have, and keep in mind that they are for the low-end of using our software. If you want to push Vegas with multiple effects, envelopes and lots of edits, the minimum processor will run out of speed fairly quickly.

You might want to try www.prorec.com. They have great articles on optimization/configuration. Also be sure to check out their discussion group as well.
