Suggestion v18: Allow setting the default Color Picker from RGB to HSV

cadudesun wrote on 6/13/2020, 8:14 AM

Edited:

Topic changed to SUGGESTION, since Vegas 17 doesn't allow changing the default RGB color picker, as discussed below.

It is much easier and intuitive to pick up a color from HSV (HxS) since you can see all colors, the full spectrum at once. RGB is not intuitive at all.

Anyway, the suggestion is to allow the user to choose their default color picker scheme, other than being mandatory to use RGB.

Original Thread:

Hi,

I'd appreciate your help with Vegas Pro 17.

Always I need to select a color in Vegas (e.g. for Titles, FX/OFX) the default color picker is RGB.

For better color selection, every time I need to pick up a color I need to change from RGB to HSV or HSL color palette first.

Let's say I changed to HSV and picked up a color, and later I want to adjust that color. Even I had selected HSV, when I open the color picker again, Vegas will show RGB, not retaining/keeping my last HSV choice for a customized color selection!

Summing up, the default Vegas workflow for pick up color is inefficient because:

- Several clicks are needed just to pick up a color.

- And even for the colors I already selected, if I need to change them later, Vegas will reset the color picker to RGB, demanding more additional clicks again.

What I'm looking for:

How to change default Color Picker from RGB to HSV (or HSL)?

Thank you!

You don't need to take more clicks. The color will be the same no matter if you picked them in HSL or RGB mode. It's just a different math for the same core.

There's no way to change the default of RGB.

Thanks for your reply @Marco.

The color is the same, but it is much easier for me to pick up from HSV (HxS) since I can see all colors, the full spectrum at once. RGB is not intuitive at all, guessing work for me.

I changed the thread title from a question to a suggestion, since I think many users (I would bet every beginner user) would benefit of an easier and more intuitive color picker.

From the Vegas developers standpoint, it is just to create a setting to choose the default color picker scheme. It sounds simple to implement...

The suggestion is to allow users to choose their default color picker scheme, so who likes RGB, sticks with it as default. And who likes every other color picker scheme will also be happy :)

Yes, I second this. For instance if you want the lower the luma (brightness) of a selected color it's much faster in HSL mode because you only need to pick one slider.

Hi @Marco.

In other to make this thread a suggestion to Vegas developers, do you know if I should tag or perform anything?

Or just by the thread title Vegas crew will find and take note about the suggestion?

Thanks!

I would also like to see an option to select our preferred defaults for this and all other dialogs. Frustrating to always have to reset things back over and over again, like the size and position of effect panels.

Just found more threads with people frustrated because of the default - mandatory - RGB color picker, and the many unnecessary mouse clicks requested to choose the other color picker schemes:

I will forward this suggestion to the developers.

Also, Vegas developers can take inspiration from MAGIX Video Pro X "color picker", which is advertised as a recent feature of that video editing software:

https://www.magix.com/us/video-editor/video-pro-x/new-features/#c1199610

Video Pro X has a Color Wheel "color picker", similar to the recent picker introduced by Photoshop as well.

Vegas Pro 17.

The RGB color value cannot be changed, it is set by default. And in order not to fool yourself and not waste your time, I can recommend you a service https://create.vista.com/colors/color-names/dark-olive-green/. Here you will find various color palettes for your tasks. A very handy service that you may find useful.
