Suggestions for cool effects making a music video?

I am shooting a music video for some friends and I have VV 4. I don't want to use to many transitions as I don't want a canned look to it. I will be shooting multi-cam angles and from different live shows and also some staged stuff. I have a couple ideas like ghost effects and a couple others. It will be a rap video if that helps much. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks I love this forum.....

I've heard it said many times before on this forum, "Watch MTV and VH1 for a while." Quick cuts, closups on guitars and drums, weird angles looking up, looking down, slowmo. I'm no expert but I bet if you watched the video channels for a couple days before you started editing it would get you in the right frame of mind (for that matter, before the shoot to give you ideas what you need to assign different cameras to do).

And dont forget about the girls. Seems like every video out today has a few TnA shots in it :)

I have only done a few. Many of them are for intros for event videos. For a rap video I would say that some extreme closeups and multiple camera angles would work well. Music videos are definitely a cuts only scenario. Go to the MSNBC media pages or other media pages and watch the rap videos there. I would also rent "8- Mile" to get some ideas as well.

No single cut should be more than 3 sec. with most between 1 and 2 sec.

For some reason, it was decided somewhere that a rap video is the only type of music video that the artist is allowed to look into the camera lens.

a straight cut or crossfade should be your only type of transition, and if the song is faster beat then crossfades should be at a bare minimum.

Holding the camera down low, angled up towards the artist with the artist crouching to rap to the camera is, for some reason, popular.

Having the Rapper rap to the camera while standing in front of a crowd of about 20 or so friends is common.

Gotsta have the shorties! (Translation: It is recommended to have one to three attractive women appearing in the video)

Good luck. -Shon
