Super Newbie question???

Hi all. I am very new at this and am starting to think I should have started with a simpler program but am determined to figure this out! I have a project finished and have moved it to DVDA only to find that it is 5.2 GB and I only have 4.7 GB on my DVDs. I can't find anywhere in the studio portion of the program that will tell me my file size before I render. I can cut portions out of my project but don't know how much to cut. The rendering takes too long for trial and error. Help please...

DVDA is notorious for overestimating. If you have a DVD-RW lying around handy go ahead and try preparing and burning to see if it works. Chances are you'll be ok.

A better option is to render to DV .avi in Vegas, then let DVDA encode to MPEG2. DVDA will pick the right bitrate necessary to make your video fit with the highest quality possible.

In DVDA, there is an option 'Fit to disc'. DVDA will then automatically do changes to the bitrate so that your movie fits on one disk. It just happened to me with approximately the same project size as yours, and I can tell you that the final result looked still good. It took 2.5 hours to render, prepare and burd the dvd.
Here is the workflow. Hit 'Make movie' and push prepare (or burn). Select a prepare 'folder' and hit 'next'. In the next screen you will see a review of all the messages. There is also an 'optimize' button. Hit that button. On the optimize screen, in the bottom left corner, you'll find the button 'fit to disc'. Hit it. DVDA will do the maths for you. (btw, you can also determine yourself which movie must be optimized, and which not.) In my case, I got an average bitrate of 5,322, which is still ok. Hit 'ok' and you'll return to the make movie screen. Hit 'next' and start rendering and preparing. Then burn the cd.

Thanks Chien and Ivan. I tried to optimize the project and did what you said (Ivan) and it gave me a messege that said: Media file is too big andd could not fit into single DVD disc. Consider making more media assets available for recompress or removing some media assets. Does this sound like anything anyone knows about? Also, I tried to burn it anyway like you suggested Chien but it would not allow me to stating that it would not fit onto the disc. I went ahead and went back into the studio and took off a good part of my vid and re-rendered it under a different name. When I pulled it into DVDA it had now grown to 7.3 GB. Two more gigs! How can that be when I cut it back. I don't get it.

What file type do you render to?

mpg? Does that sound right? I went back to where I saved the original render and that's the extension at the end. I also tried to render to avi as Kelly had suggested and it was not even in the options to open in DVDA? I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. There seems to be more than what I thought I knew about the process

Mpg is ok, this is what DVDA needs.
What is the duration of your movie? (You should be able to put approximately 1 hour ov movie on a dvd.)

btw, what version of Vegas/DVDA do you use?

4.5
Just wanted to say thanks sooo much for your help! I have now made 3 DVDs and am continuing on. I think that my major problem before was that I was using footage captured in a different program. I figured that out but since then have captured through Vegas and have had zero problems.
