Support for REC 709?

I'm a little confused.
The color correction tools are not covered in depth in the user manual, so when I read about them in Spots' book 'Vegas Pro 8 Editing Workshop', he states they (plus the vector and waveform monitors) only support REC 601.

Is this true for Vegas in general or just the Color corrector plug-ins. If not for Vegas in general, does this mean that external hardware based monitoring is a requirement for rec 709 oriented editing?

In Rec. 709, the luma coefficients are different so the targets on the vectorscope and waveform monitors should be in different locations. In practice it doesn't really matter for color correction... things are just displayed differently.

If you have a copy of FCP, flip between HD and SD and see how the targets on the scopes move. (But FCP's scopes are 100% accurate in other areas.)

2- Depending on what you're doing, there can be benefits to external hardware based monitoring. But if you don't know what those benefits are then you probably don't need external scopes.

(e.g. if you constantly send out broadcast masters, then you should know that you need real scopes.)

So...Vegas itself can handle rec 709 video just fine, but trying to use the scopes as they are right now isn't useful.

Thanks Glenn, I guess we need to add another item to the wish list.

Well they are useful as they were for SD. Or, the other way to look at it, is that they're wrong in a way that doesn't matter.

They just aren't technically correct... which doesn't matter if you are just using them to set things like black level.
