DVD Architect will accept several formats.

Where the confusion is coming in for you, I think, is what it's going to do with those files in order to produce a DVD. No matter what you give it, it has to convert those videos into MPEG2 because MPEG2 is what DVDs use.

And when it re-encodes those files to MPEG2, it's going to do so at a much higher bitrate (this is how many bits per second the file will be) as required by the DVD specifications ("rules" that govern the standards of the DVD format). The default bitrate for files re-encoded in DVD Architect is 8Mbps. I'm guessing your MP4 files are encoded at less than 1Mbps, which is why you're seeing the jump in file size.

You can go to File > Optimize Disc and decrease the bitrate if you're worried about space, but don't expect to get anywhere near that 226.7MB per file.
