Surprised that I'm penalized for purchasing Boxed

I'm surprised and unhaph that I am not able to continue to use Sony Vegas Pro 11 because I spent more money to receive boxed version and my trial has expired.

I've used Sony Vegas Pro since version 9. I purchased the downloadable upgrade of version 10 and was up & running immediately because the purchase confirmation email included download instructions & serial number.

When I purchased the boxed version upgrade from ver 10 to 11 online here at SonyCreativeSoftware.com, I thought that I would receive a similar purchase confirmation including serial number. That wasn't the case. My purchase confirmation didn't include any serial number, but included an order number.

My trial version of version 11 has now expired. I called customer service to see if there might be some way to continue using a trial version of version 11 until my boxed version arrives (scheduled to be delivered 11/29, according to ups).

I was told that there was no way to do so.

So, purchasing a boxed upgrade online does not afford one the same customer status as purchasing a downloadable upgrade. All projects that I've worked on in version 11 are "dead in the water" -- on hold until i receive the box in the mail.

That's too bad for me. Thanks for listening.

The other disappointing thing is there is nothing special about it. I would have rather saved the extra money and just downloaded it immediately. Usually companies give some bonus material when purchasing boxed but there wasn't even a book that amounted to anything.

I did something similar with version 9. So with version 10 I tried the downloadable version and then of course with V11.

There's really no easy way to put a serial number in the box and also email it to you at purchase. I'm sure it could be done with a bar code on the outside of the box and a system that would email you as the box went out the door, but then you have scenarios where someone steals the serial number in the store, or alternatively where you purchase for a friend, but the serial number is attached to your email.

It would likely raise the cost of the box, the warehouse and a few other things.

Once you have ordered and paid for a boxed version (at $15 more), your serial number needs to be sent immediately and you must be allowed to use the software until the disc arrives. NO QUESTION ABOUT IT. Anything else is BS, and Sony gains nothing by being cavalier about it.

I think you should demand that your $15 surcharge be refunded, and stick to your guns.

It's obvious that if you order a boxed version the SN is in the box and you wait for the box. No different then ordering any other boxed software from anywhere else. If it wasn't in the box then why offer the option for a boxed-only copy?

They used to have an option with the downloaded software that allowed you to purchase the physical materials too. That option got you the SN right away and mailed you the box with the stuff in it. That's what I always did. That's what should be done for a boxed option, but you can't download + pay the different for the physical stuff.

Hi, TheHappyFriar,
Thank you for your comment. It was not obvious to me that I would be in the place that I am now, unable to continue working on my projects, after paying for an upgrade for a product that I've been using enthusiatically for the prior two major releases.

It was not obvious to me (or I wouldn't be in this place) that there would not be some means for the service department to help me continue to be productive with their product after paying to upgrade the product that I have owned for years.

I even checked to see what possible remedy would be available if I changed my mind now that do know the consequences of my errant decision (that was based on trust of Sony Customer Service). If I now want to return the box (which has already shipped), I will have to pay for shipping to return it, I will not be refunded the shipping of the product to me.

If I were to purchase a downloadable Vegas Pro 11 (to allow me to use it in the interim, while waiting for my box), it would not be refundable.

So, unless I am willing to own 2 copies of Sony Vegas Pro 11 (I only have one edit machine), I am unable to work on my projects until the box arrives. I would think that Sony Service Department would have some interest in making their loyal customer more successful.

But anyway, as before, thanks for listening(reading).

When does the tracking # say it will get there? Maybe it will get there tomorrow (Friday). Can you uninstall, clean the registry & reinstall Vegas 11's demo?
