Started a topic in the 'Vegas - Audio' section re. surround sound panning keyframes in V5.

Would appreciate it if some of you 'vid' guys could have a look at tell me if I'm

A) talking rubbish
B) right but you like the way it works now
c) right and Sony should change the way it works
d) what is surround anyway?

Thanks peeps,
here's the thread link

No, I don't think you're talking rubbish.

Unless it's something obvious, who's to say if any given method is right or wrong? Sounds to me like it's just different.

Yes, some things have changed from v4 to v5, but for me that's to be expected. As such, I expect to change the way those things are done.

Frustrating as it may be, in these instances, I think you'll experience less frustration by learning to "go with the flow," but that's just one person's opinion.

I haven't tried surround as yet, one thing that puts me if is I can see it to be a task requiring a lot of planning. If you had location surround recordings to start with it'd be pretty easy but trying to add foley and the like must be tedious no matter how it's done. I would have thought using automation would be the way to go though, can't you use something as simple as a joystick for the panner?

. . . can't you use something as simple as a joystick for the panner?

Sticks in my mind that I read somewhere that was a possibility, but I could be wrong.

I've used the surround sound. In one instance, there was a jet fly over, from left rear to right front. I simply keyframed where it was start and where it was to end. Very simple, actually. So far, I haven't seen that something like a joystick would "simplify" the process.

J-

Okay, that example you gave is perfect - In vegas 4 you would have dropped in two surround keyframes and adjusted the start and end positions.

In Vegas 5 you have to first enable automation controls, and then you can only adjust the individual keyframes while playback is stopped, otherwise you end up dropping a bunch of Kframes with the movement of the playback head.

I know I'm repeating myself here, but it's the equivilant of not being able to ajust volume or opactiy envelopes until you have enabled automation, and then only being able to make adjustments either while playback is stopped or live at the position of the moving playback head.

Joysticks don't really come into this - it's not the physical control, but the process of recording the automation data that is a problem.

Mike, I see what you're saying, now.

Hope no one takes this the wrong way, but I guess I don't concern myself with the path as much as I do the destination, in things like this anyway.

You can use joysticks to do surround panning with Vegas.

Here's what a Sony rep wrote last year.
