The SVCD standard is MPEG2. VCD is MPEG1.

From memory, MS will burn an svcd, but it wont have menus and chapters. If you want those you'll need another program. Nero can produce them, and probably other cd burners can too.

Be warned though, not all DVD players can handle svcd menus - in general, the cheaper the player, the more likely it is to work.

You mean the less likely it is to work, right? :)

The MORE likely. SVCD and VCD have been used in markets like China and Taiwan for a long time. So DVD players designed for those markets will generally play them. With the Free Trade Agreement, more of these units, which tend to be cheaper in price, are available in the US. Some Sonys will not play SVCD, but players like Norcent and Apex will play them fine.

I've never tried a SVCD.. do you just burn the MPEG2 file to a CD, or is there a more elaborate "authoring" procedure involved?
kirsol wrote on 12/23/2003, 8:03 AM
An SVCD needs to be formatted in a specific way (just like an audio disc has a specific format).

Media Studio 3 itself will make a very basic SVCD - no chapters or menus, just a single file that auto-plays in a DVD player.

I believe MyDVD, which comes bundled with MS3, also allows you to create more elaborate SVCD's, which include menus and chapters. I haven't it used it for that purpose though (I use Ulead DVD Movie Factory, which I already owned before I upgraded to MS3).

Thanks for the input - I saw the option to create a VCD in the "make movie" dialog... had not noticed that before. Everything went fine except for one tiny problem - the final product has no audio. I certainly get audio during my preview, and also if recorded to DV tape... I do not have a DVD burner just yet, so cannot test that.

Another Q: my DVD player says it will play SVCD's... how do I go about doing that?
kirsol wrote on 12/23/2003, 7:44 PM

I've discovered that VCD and SVCD creation isn't always a troublefree process. In fact, it can be downright frustrating at times. Unfortunately, I haven't a clue as to why you have no audio. It might be an issue with your player. Perhaps try it in another player, or in a software-based player?

To make an SVCD, you need MS3 (VF2 will only make a VCD) or a third-party tool. I was just trying to check out the possibility of SVCD creation in MyDVD (which comes with MS3). But I get an error when launching MyDVD. See note about frustration above. ;-)

Thanks Mitch - dunno why there is no audio, and I only have 1 DVD player in which to test it.... I'll have to wander over to a neighbor's house soon and try it there.

I have MS3 and I do not see an option to creat a SVCD in "make movie" - only VCD. Is this an option elsewhere?

Just a shot in the dark about the audio problem. If you are using RCA cables, (a red and white for audio) try switching them around. Seems like a little thing, but I've had problems like this and the cables needed to be reversed.

I finally had a chance to check this again.....

Its not the VCD that is the source of my problem... when I used the VCD template, it creates a MPEG-1 file, and appears to burn that to a CD. I played the MPEG file in windows media player, and there is no audio there either.

Any ideas as to why creating a MPEG-1 file has no audio, but saving back to my DV tape DOES have audio?

OK - I'm stumped. I cannot seem to find a reason why I have no audio on a VCD/MPEG-1 file.... anyone have insight into this?

It's usually no audio on capture which is a problem, so it's rare for no audio on burn. Any yellows in device manager?; DMA enabled on hd's? Which os are you?
djcc wrote on 12/29/2003, 10:30 AM
The project is a still photo slide show. The only audio to the project is a series of MP3 files. No errors in device manager, system is 2.4 Ghz P4, 512Mb ram, over 50Gb free disk space, WinXP OS.

Audio is exactly as it should be when creating an AVI. No audio at all when creating an MPEG-1 (in the attempt to create a VCD). I do not have a DVD burner.

Something else I do not understand - MP3 files which are used in the project now have 2 additional files stored in the same directory - the have the same file name, but the extensions of SFAP0 and SFK have been appended to the name. The SFAP0 file is quite large for each of these files.... what are these files?
