SVCD jittery playback problems - a solution

Hi folks,

Having just helped someone else with sorting out strange jittery playback problems, created when rendering to interlaced PAL SVCD MPEG from PAL DV footage in VV3 (which look at first like the field order is wrong, except that changing it doesn't fix it...), I thought other people might be interested in the solution (arrived at after an evening of trial and error and head scratching ! )

The main change is in the 'Render As' dialog - tick the box 'Stretch video to fill output frame size (do not letterbox)'. With it not ticked (the default) I think VV3 was doing some weird resizing (not apparent in the preview) which was resulting in stuff being swapped between fields - at least that is what it looked like on a paused frame in the DVD player.

The other change is on the custom MPEG settings -> Advanced Video page - tick the 'Write sequence display extension' box (this seems to be an oversight in the supplied template - the MPEG encoding guide says it should be ticked)

Also found that CBR encoding seems to give better quality than VBR (but then this is not unusual...).

Tony
