swap space on your cache drive?

Former user wrote on 5/2/2022, 8:25 AM

Hi, I'm wandering if anyone can help, I've been talking with the Boris Mocha boss Martin,

he wrote this when i asked why Mocha Pro was not playing back at full fps, it plays at about 80-90% speed,

'swap space on your cache drive?' I sort of understand that but sort of don't either 😂🤷‍♂️

I shared a 1.45min vid on YT for him, it has 1 view & that was me checking it had uploaded ok, so i don't think he could be bothered watching it,

@Former user  ... hitting the YT video both here and on BorisFX's forum results in nothing more than a 'This video is private' message.

@Former user

I think he just means enough empty space on your hard drive where the cache is saved.

I know from your "signature", that you use the WRX80 platform with Threadripper Pro. I use two different PC's with a 2nd Gen and one with 3rd Gen Threadripper. Both computers, besides the motherboard mounted M.2 drives, I have the Asus M.2 x 16 adapters, for an additional Four (4) M.2 drives. In the screenshot, you can see where I have the Temporary (Cache) files, which you can access via the "Options > Preferences" location, and at the bottom see where the "Default" location is (typically in the AppData Hidden folder area). If you have a spare M.2 to put in an adapter as above (or a single M.2 PCI-e adapter card), use that for any programs "Cache" or "Temporary" file location. From one of your previous posts, I saw that you were contemplating purchasing one of these adapters, or already have it (Just checked: your board came with the Hyper M.2 card - unless you purchased "Open Box" and didn't get it). And, you definitely have plenty of PCI-e slots, all of which are @16 speed. So you only need to go into the BIOS/UEFI, and set the particular slot to 4x4x4x4, or I think Asus calls it "RAID", so the 16 lanes get bifurcated down to 4x4x4x4. Hope that helps. And, you don't need a superfast M.2, but since you are rocking Gen 4, go that route. Of course, the cheaper route could even be getting say a 1 or 2 TB Samsung EVO SATA SSD, which would work as well. Just have to deal with the extra cables (SATA & Power), whereas with the Hyper card, you don't!

@Chief24 @misohoza Hi, My PC came with the Gen 4 card which both my 7000MB/s Read, 5100MB/s Write drives are on, Windows & programs on one, Temp project files on the other, at the moment there's more than 1.5TB free space on the each of them, all other completed videos/media gets moved to other storage drives, at the end of a project all used files inc temp stuff gets deleted, I keep them clean free of crap & minimal programs,

I bought another Gen 4 card so i could separate those two drives, or i might just put the (C) drive on the motherboard, we'll see when i come to do it, This PC case is massive & my PC doesn't get much down-time.

BTW this isn't a Vegas issue, it's a Mocha Pro plugin & the Standalone problem, + PC or Mocha settings, both plugin & standalone playback at a slightly slower rate than full fps. .

Thanks.

@Former user  ... Thanks. I see what you mean. I'm not getting that slow down here in Mocha Pro 2022 OFX, but I'm only using one video event on VP19's timeline with no other VFX added; however, there was a one-off stutter at one point.

In Preferences/Output Settings, I have the Autosave and Cache Directory fields pointed to the E drive (just a 2.5" 5400 rpm spinning disk) whereas the media is on the D drive (WD Black 7200 rpm). OS is on the M.2 SSD C drive.

In Preferences/GPU, does increasing Texture RAM make any difference? Just purely speculative. And in the same window, is the Use GPU Processing option checked and the Open CL Device set as you would want? Also does File/Clear Cache then playing again make any difference? Again, only speculative.

If they don't improve things, then they are options that can be discounted - sort of like isolation testing.
