Sync problem fix help needed

I am not a very power user of VV, so I hope you can excuse my ignorance on this subject.
I have 1h 49m avi file and also wav file of that relates to the picture.
But they are badly out of sync (they came from different sources)
At the start the audio is -3.88 sec offset (it stays this same till ~ 20 min into the film), at the end it is -1.56 sec, but during the film the offset fluctuates from -4 sec to +2 sec.
What would be the correct approach to try to sort the sync for the whole duration?

Thanks

Seb

Is the wav file intended to go with the avi file? Does the avi file not have sound?

If the asnwer to both are yes, then you may have good results by doing the following.

1) Select the two tracks by click on one and then clik on the other while holding the CTRL key.
2) Group the tracks together by right clicking on either of them and selecting Group/Create New Group.
3) Divide the group into 3 or 4 equal segments at appropriate places in the video. Both the video and audio should split.
4) If your video looks fine, speedwise, thru the whole film then you will need to strech or shrink your audio appropriately. Leave your first segment where it is and shift down the others by selecting them all with CTRL held down.
5) Then you need to ungroup the first segment. Right click on the first segment and select group/ungroup.(forgive me if I do not have the commands exactly right, I am not in at my VV system right now).
6) Make sure the audio and video at beginning of the segment sync up. Move the audio segment left or right at test with a loop.
7) Now go to the end of your segment and look for an obvious audio event like a clap or closup of some talking. See where your audio is compared to the visual. If the audio is behind, then you will need to shrink the audio event. if it is ahead, then you will need to strech it. To do either of these. Go to the end of the audio segment and hold down the CTRL key. you will see the icon change with a little squiggly mark. You can now move right to strech and left to shrink. Keep moving it and playing a loop in that area until the audio and video sync up.
8) Repeats these steps for the remaining segemnts.

Keep in mind that this only works for short out-of-sync problems. If it is too out-of-sync than you can get some worbling of the audio. Also, make sure you have maintain pitch enabled (Don't remember off hand where this is set.)

Hope this helps!
