Hello, y'all.
I'm trying to sync my computer audio setup to my open reel
1/2" 8 track using a JLCooper PPS-2 Sync box. It
translates the SMPTE track into MTC which is fed into the
MIDI port of the soundcard. I'm using Vegas v1.0b, though
I have tried this with CoolEditPro with similarly
disappointing, albeit different, results.
Vegas can see the MTC and will record a track of audio.
Sometimes it will playback this new audio track just fine.
It doesn't always like to chase, it is more successful at
triggering playback. When I have it set to chase, it seems
to sync well for a split second before the playback rate
drops significantly, like the motor in a record player
losing power and slowly speeding up again. By the time it
has regained its speed, it's out of sync by about a 10th of
a second. When I have it set to trigger, this slowing-down
problem doesn't happen, but it's not always an accurate
trigger, and I can hear it losing time against the 8
track.
When I try to record a second track, things get really
exciting. I don't have 'simultaneous play & record' on,
but when I playback the two tracks with the tape they seem
to be permanently behind by a tenth to a half of a second,
and they're losing time against the 8 track even faster
than before.
So is it the processor? Is it the drive? Is it the
soundcard? The software? Is this possibly the result of
using the wrong kind of RAM?
Or will I have more luck syncing an ADAT to the 8 track?
Here's what I'm using:
Compaq Desktop 5461
AMD-K6 3D processor
248 MB ram
Gadget Labs Wave/824 soundcard
runnning in seperate hardware profile with as much
extraneous stuff turned off as I could find.
recording to secondary internal IDE 20gig UDMA drive, can't
remember the speed, but it was the fastest one available a
year ago.
I appreciate the help!
Jason
