sync to MIDI

I have a project in Vegas that I need to layback to a DA-78
8-track. The project is 55 minutes in length and I can't
make a complete run through without losing the MIDI
timecode. I have Vegas set up to chase to MIDI output from
the DA-78 - it locks in fine and starts to chase, but
always loses the code at least once within the 55 minutes.
I've tried adjusting the freewheel slack and playback times
(in the advanced sync settings), but to no avail. Any
hints or suggestions on how to keep Vegas locked to code?

What did you set your freewheel times to?
Is Vegas set to Trigger or chase in the advanced sync page?

Q: Are you having to sync up what is on the DA-78 or is this just a
transfer to tape from Vegas?

I've never tried to sync something that long before...I think that
midi not be the technology you're looking for. As far as I know some
drift is unavoidable.

Vegas is set to chase mode. I set the slack time to .200 and
playback to 20 seconds. I'm not sure exactly how the freewheel
works, it's a little unclear from the help topic. The reason I need
to sync is because my soundcard has only four outputs, so I have to
make two passes to layback 8 tracks. I understand that MIDI drifts,
but as long as it drifts at the exact same rate each time I layback,
it shouldn't be a problem. I have to match music and dialogue, so it
doesn't have to be word clock accurate, but they do have to line up
within a couple frames - any more and the inaccuracy becomes
noticeable.
