syncing audio

Hi all, I'm running a HVX200 with Raylight and have an edited clip of video where the main audio tracks didn't come out as I would have liked. I'd like to use the third and fourth tracks from onboard mics and sync them to the video timeline. Since the video has already been trimmed, it's not a matter of lining up the beginning of the clips. I need to use the timecode but I can't find where or how.

I've tried enabling "View | Active Take Information" and it only works on the audio tracks that were brought to the timeline with the video. It would be great if I could associate the third and fourth audio like one and two are.

Please help!

Andy,

It doesn't really matter if the clips have been trimmed. Just put the new audio on the timeline, then visually synch it. Once you've got it close, define a region of the timeline and start loop play. When looping, drag the new audio left or right to eliminate any echo. When the echo's gone, you can mute or delete the old audio. Once the new audio is in place, you should consider grouping the video with the new audio, to avioid it slipping out of synch with further editing.

Cheers,

G.

Thanks. I'll give that a shot but the main tracks are so faint that I'm not sure how it will work out. Is there no way to align using timecode? The tracks were recorded simultaneously on the camera.

Andy,

When you say the tracks are faint, are you saying that you are not seeing much waveform deflection? If so, you can boost the audio levels by right clicking on the audio portion of the clip, then choose Switches>Normalize. This will cause the waveform to have much more mass, which will make synching easier.

I'm not sure about showing timecode, though I think that it is possible.

I can't figure out timecode either so I went back and redid the clip. Anyone know something about how to work in timecode? I'm going to keep searching on my own but any tips are most welcome ;)

I shot a music video last year that relied on time code.
I experienced some strange behavious when editing but the good folks here helped me out.

If your audio signals are faint, try the tip Bob (farss) suggested in the Syncing audio tracks thread a few hours ago.

A question for you.
\When you imported your footage, did you import all 4 audio tracks at the same time?
If yes, then you should just be able to drop tracks 3 & 4 on the timeline and they should match up. You may need to add timecode to the clips but this is easily done in Vegas Pro 8 with the "Add timecode to all media" script.
If you didn't add them at the time, can you import only those tracks now?
The video can come along "for the ride" as that extra video tack can be muted.
All you need it for is for timecode purposes.
