System Lock ups

I'v been having a bit of a problem rendering a 3 minute mpeg2 dvd compliant video.
My system locks at various points in the process. The project has seven video tracks, lots of cross fades and velocity envelopes ( nothing vegas can't do ). The only kicker is the generated text track, used for credits ( about 100 entries ).
I've used the Main Concept and the Standard SF enceoder with the same result. Both video only.

I rendered the text track to an avi file and replaced the generated track with the avi, things seem to be rendering well at this point. I won't know for another 4 hours until the process completes.

Does seven hours sound like a long time to render this project ??

System:
Dual PIII 800
1 Gig 133 ram
160 gig hardisk in raid
ati raidon 64 video
win 2k all updates

Seven hours for a 3 minute mpeg does sound a little extreme. Granted I'm rendering with a AMD XP2000+ processor (1.67ghz) but my most current phase of my latest project only took 5-10 minutes to render as a 3 minute avi file. I had several PIP effects throughout. I too have 1GB of RAM.

This is seven constant streams 5 pips with lots of edits. Considering, I dont think its too bad, the generated txt file too an hour to render to avi. I had the other tracks disabled, but still in the same project. Regular renders with simple edits and transitions are real quick.
