Can anybody who has SMP5c working well with V5b share their XP Tweaks and Performance settings with me?

I'm running a 3G P4 Shuttle XPC, with 500mb FSB, 1G of RAM, and an ATI 9700Pro card card -- with SYSTEM Properties>Advanced> Processor scheduling, Memory usage toggled to Programs, and Virtual memory set to 2500 MB on my system C Drive. WinXP SP1

My SMP5c WP Tweaks>Performance settings are set to

Windows NT/2000/XP Pagefile use -- checked-- to improve sysem performance in Win

Speed-up access to AVI media files -- checked-- to enable faster access to AVI media files

Automatically reboot on bluescreen - unchecked

Force Core Windows System to be kept in Memory- unchecked - NOT to force core Windows System to be kept in memory

Toggle Window Animation - unchecked

launch Windows Desktop as a Separate Process - unchecked to NOT launch Windows Desktop as a separate process

Optimize the System Cache Size for - Desktop computer, instead of Network server

Force Windows to Unload DLLs from Memory - unchecked NOT to force Windows to unload DLLs from memory

Speed-ip Browsing Remote Computers - checked - to disable checking for scheduled tasks AND checked- to disable checking for printers

Prefetch cache management settings- toggled to last option- Monitor application and boot file launch (Recommended)

ON THE Windows NT,2000,XP TAB
I only have the option for Clear pagefile at shutdown checked.

ON the TCP/IP TAB
I only have the Defend Against Denail of Service Attacks- checked to Disable Automatic MTU Discovery

Thanks for any insights,

bt

Also -- what's the recommend on the Kaminsky firewall and anti-hacker components that come with SMP5c? For those who hook to the new when not editing?

If you had a 500 Megahertz machine with 64MB ram then maybe these tweaks would have some merit, but on a fast machine it is doubtful that you will see any difference in performance.

When you change all the defaults, then you have to troubleshoot a lot of extra and usually forgotten settings when something goes wrong.

That is my opinion.

Hmm.

Not to long ago I was on that dual proc 650mhz machine you describe, but with 1G of RAM then too....

I can't say the performance in my current situation is much beyond the performance I had then.

Does graphics card ACCELERATION still need to be turned completely off in V5b, and how much difference should running at 16bit versus 32bit color alter performance?

No, Graphic Acceleration should be turn on and put to max.
Minimal difference on 16bit color vs 32 bits on the AT1Pro display card.

You may want to do this tweak to better the system performance.
Visual Effects Setting
Right-click on the My Computer icon, select Advances, click the Performance "Settings" button, you'll see a new tab Visual Effects and then An Advanced tab. Click the Visual Effects tab. select adjust for best performance.
Enable Clear Type
Right click on a blank area of the Desktop and choose Properties
- Click on the Appearance Tab; Click Effects - Check the box: Use the following method to smooth edges of screen fonts- In the drop down box select: Clear Type.

This helps my system performance. You may want to try it.

I have System mechanic 4 and the system tweaks don't get implimented. As said above, with a decent computer using the default windows installatiuon setup, it should breeze through Vegas. But do give it its own often defraged HD and plenty of RAM.

Oh man, Lawrence, that made a big differnce on the responsiveness of my computer. New windows seem to pop up MUCH faster. Could that have ment that my on-board video card is so crappy that turning off the XP frills put less strain on it?

Thanks man, I hadn't noticed that settings box before!
