Tagging of video

I am a convert to Vegas Movie Studio. I am working on a 2 hour long video. It contains 10 years of home movies.

I would like to "tag" sections of the video to tell what they are without hunting through the whole thing. It will also help me permanently date the sections of the video I so I can remember.

Is there a way to do this?

I'm not sure where you want to do this tagging. Do you want to organise things on the time line or do you want your source material binned such that all the related stuff is in one place?

I have to confess that i always do this with file names. I'll spend some time at the beginning of a project making sure all the clips have names like, "beth's bday 2001-03-17 candles". Yeah, it takes a while, but then no matter where you are, in Vegas, or poking around your hard drive, you've got that info tied right to the clip.

I have a 2 hour movie on the timeline. It spans 10 years in time. I am slowly getting the dates for each event and wondered if there was a way to "tag", for instance, a childs 8th birthday with relavent information that will stay with that portion of the movie as I edit and such.

I am trying to avoid cutting up the movie in to 200-300 tiny segments and using file names.

Can this be done? Someone told me something about a "bin", but I could not see how this would work.

open the thing up in trimmer. right click the video and then left click the open in trimmer option. add your markers there and then save them for future reference. I did the same thing as you and this worked well for me you can select sections and rearrange the whole thing as you like .

have fun!

Hi Rustier,

Even with my poor description you understood what I wanted to do. Thanks. It works great.

One last question- As I edit the video will the marker stay with that frame I marked regardless of where I move it to in the timeline?

I believe the answer to that is yes. If you save the markers it will keep the association with the file. You may want to note that trimmer markers and timeline markers seem to be treated differently. To be honest with you - to date I have only used the markers for editing purposes. If you are using markers for in-out points in a dvd - you may have to add timeline makers (easily with snap) so that they carry over to your dvd project - or you can add (or clear) the markers in dvda itself. I hope that doesn't confuse you.

A very nice feature of Rustier's method is that the marker stays with the audio and the video, even if you separate them. Another method might be to use "takes" - select your clip and hit F2 to name it. I think it's more convenient than the trimmer, but it handles the audio and video separately. On the plus side, View / Active Take Information will show the information for all your clips.
