I’m using it and find it to be very complimentary. While there are overlapping functions, (there will always be overlapping functions whenever Vegas is involved because Vegas is so rich in compositing functions) there are also some powerful rotoscoping, pixel tracking, and path generation and mapping functions that will blow you away (and can’t be done in Vegas).
My favorite is the ability to do handwriting for titles. This is one of those things that’s asked about every so often in this forum and it has been done with gradient luminance masks but Mirage makes it simple. Just draw anything you want (not just text). Tell it how long you want to take for it to draw it in real-time, then save that as a path. Finally, pick a brush or particle emitter (did I mention it has a particle generator just like particleIllusion has?) and you can write your title in white chalk or star dust or anything you want.
For particle generation, it is much easier to use than particleIllusion for complex paths. I’m working with it in HDV, something I can’t do with particleIllusion 2.0 (I don’t know about 3.0) because PE2 requires you to resize the stage window to final rendering size and that is a physical impossibility for me with HDV. (my LCD doesn’t have the resolution)
The pixel tracking is also very nice. You can do things like map an advertisement on the side of a passing bus to anything you want. Pixel tracking can also be used for image stabilization. The more I use it, the more I like it. Check out some of the tutorials on the Bauhaus web site to see it in action.
...and if you miss getting it before midnight CST tonight, but have one of the following apps, you can buy a not time limited cross-grade for $395, and that even includes Animators Toolbar, a $149 value:
Adobe ® - Flash ®
Corel ® - Painter™
Wonder Touch™ - ParticleIllusion™
(and a bunch of specialist packages)
I'm getting the Boardomatic 2.0 add-on also, it works like the way I like to make them (on paper with a pencil), but BETTER which I didn't think was possible.
I thought FrameForge was getting in the way of the creative process too much, but Boardomatic seems to work in a very natural way.
Some great, high end users contributed ideas for the workflow. I worked with guys at Disney, Pixar, Cartoon Network, Nickelodeon, and some of the top boarding guys from the film industry as well. It was a real treat!
