tales from the crypt-vegas 1.0b question

Hi all,

I know everybody on this forum is way past using vegas pro 1.0b ,but hey,
I'm still using it and it still suits my needs.

Here's my question:

I got a P3/1200 with an M Audio Audiophile 2496 with this Vegas version and up until recently I used the NT drivers for this card because the 24 bit functionality with WDM drivers didn't work in windows 2000 +SP2.

Since Vegas stalled occasionally in Loop Mode while a track was armed for recording(but not yet recording -just determining the loop region for punch-in) I thought it would be a good idea to upgrade to XP ,so I could
use the WDM drivers, because when I used this WDM drivers in 2000 this problem went away.

But,to my surprise, after the XP upgrade with the WDM drivers ,Vegas blurts out a message when I try to play back(or record) a 24bit/44KHz project saying that the media file format (24 bit)is not supported(or something like that) .

...and I allready tried all the WDM versions for the Audiophile.

Do I missed something ? Or does Vegas 1.0b have issues with WDM ? XP ?
Or ? Or ? Any help would be appreciated !

Thanks, Gerard

I am amazed Vegas 1.0 even installs on XP- did you upgrade the OS without reinstalling the app(s)?

..I did an upgrade from Windows 2000 (with Vegas/XFX1/XFX2/XFX3 allready installed) to XP .
Are there any issues about Vegas 1.0b and XP ?

Damn, this must be a trend (Vegas Retro). This is the second user I've seen posting a question recently about running v1.0 on Windows XP. Maybe, I'll have to dig up my archives of burned CDroms with Vegas Pro v1.0b on it, and install it on my XP system.

Actually, I'm getting around to installing XP on my sequencer PC...I'm preying that my Opcode Studio Vision v2.5 will run on XP. So it's good to hear about other users using older software and having it run on XP.

Another user successfully installed v1.0b on XP. I would use the XP roll-back feature and save your current setup, then try uninstalling Vegas, and then doing a fresh install. If you have any problems, you could roll-back to your current config.

Hi,

Recording and playback at 16 bit/44KHz works fine though...
it's only the 24 bit functionality I'm missing...only then I got the message "the M-Audiophile doesn't support current mediaformat"(or something like that.).A Vegas 1.0b thingy ? And yes, tried all WDM versions -even rolled back the whole system a couple of times. To no avail. :(

Ahhhh...you got a couple possible issues you're fighting against. 1. Vegas 1.0 not supported under WinXP. 2. Users are having similar problems with M-audio card drivers even with Vegas 4. I think M-audio has a beta driver up on their site, you might want to try that out.

Also, it sounds like you're having similar problems as this user is posting:

I know that this is off of your subject but, I would like to know if you've loaded Vegas Pro 1.0a on the a computer that was using Windows 2000? I'm thinking about upgrading my OS from Windows 98 to Windows 2000. Will I have a problem installing the software once I've upgraded my OS.

This is a very archane bug in Vegas 1.0. Back in the days of 1.0, we didn't support 24 bit unpacked audio. We actually opened either at 32 bit or 24 bit packed.

There are two prefs in the hidden prefs page of Vegas that will let you force Vegas to open in unpacked mode in SOME cases with SOME hardware. Select Options | Preferences while holding the shift key down. You will see a tab labled internal. Select this and look for two entries labled Use24bitFirst. There are TWO. One for playback and one for record. THEY MUST BOTH BE SET TO THE SAME VALUE OR YOU WILL CRASH VEGAS 1.0.

This may solve your specific problem, but no promises.

Yes, there could be problems with WDM based drivers. Windows requires that WAVEFORMATEXTENSIBLE be used to open WDM based drivers in 24 bit mode. If you have native Wave drivers - echo Purewave, CardDeluxe, RME Hammerfall - then the method Vegas 1.0 uses will work correctly at 24 bit.
