Hey i have the transistion page up but i cant seem to drag them or copy them any way, i have a couple other question so if any that is good with this program has AIM or email so i can ask you a few questions?
On a realted note, is there any *easy* way to do a transition effect without the overlap... or do I need to grab the last frame (freeze-frame) of scene 1 and scene 2, stretch them out, overlapthem, and drop the transition effect on top? (Because sometimes there's not enough extra footage on the original secnes to overlap them.)
The built-in cross-fade effect that I have in my 8-year old mini-DV cam looks like it freezes the frame from the last scene you shot and fades in the video from the next scene, but I would never use it because you should be able to do that in easily post when there's not enough to overlap. Sometime you lose audio if it's too close to the edges, as well. I can do it in Vegas, just wondering if there was an easier way.
The reason the last frame freezes is because YOU HAVE NO MORE FOOTAGE! Hence the need to OVERLAP the section that HAS footage. You can't dissolve what isn't there!
If you go directly from video Event A to Video Event B that is called a straight cut. If you choose to allow some footage from the end of Video Event A to overlap Video Event B that is called a Transition - well that's how I understand it. Now, you could introduce a solid colour or any number of visual media between the end of Video Event A and the the start of Video Event B and either elect to overlap or straight cut either or both ends of this introduced media. I often use a solid colour - white mostly - to0 create a seemless and/or dramatic/change of narrative direction - works very well!
So you got : transitions, straight cuts and dissolves . . . it really depends what you want to employ AND for what reason ... simple really.
Thanks, that's sort of what I've done when I want a tranistion (dissolve) between two clips where one or both don't have sufficient lead in or lead out footage. I've used a "freeze frame" from the beginning/end if one or both clips to "lengthen" them sufficiently to dissolve between them.
As you may be realizing, you will need to start shooting video knowing you are going to edit it later. Now that you have a powerful editor in Vegas, you can ignore doing transitions in camera. More importantly you can start shooting footage with extra time before and after "the shot" this will give you enough extra footage for editing.
