You could try using some EQ, but there's really nothing that will get results as good as those provided by a dedicated noise reduction plugin.

Careful tweaking of noise-gate may result noise in quiet bits sufficiently.

The dynamics filter is much better as a noise gate than the noise gate! Hiss is impossible to get rid of by its very nature although low pass will help but you'll kill the highs as well. Buzz rather than hum is also hard to deal with due to the wide spectrum however ret notch filters at the mains fundamental frequency (50 or 60Hz) and then the harmonics (100 or 120Hz, 150 or 180Hz etc) usually the third harmonic is the worst but if its come from say dimmers it can be a big problem even with NR2.
