tape splits

Sarasdad wrote on 11/17/2007, 1:05 PM
Just finished hour long performance with no stops. I used VX2100 camera. Sony DVC premium 60 tapes. During the capture process using Vegas Movie Studio 8.0 they capture splits and makes two clips instead of one. This happens sometimes in different places on tape. When I watch tape through the camera there is no split that I can see. Sometimes more than one split. I don't know if it is camera, tapes, or capture program. There are no dropped frames shown. I have always used Vegas with digital 8 cameras for years and have never had this problem.
Confused,
Thanks, P.S. I transfer video to computer using a different camera. Panasonic DV camcorder.

When you put the two clips up on the timeline and butt them together, is there a skip there? Or does it play though continuously? If it's continuous then forget about it and just get on with your editing. Chalk it up to one of those head-scratching things that you eventually ignore.

If there is a gap there you can try recapturing with Options / Preferences / Capture / Enable DV scene detection turned off. Also check under Disk Management as you can set a maximum file size there. Once Vidcap hits that file size it will automatically start a new file.

If all that fails and you still have a gap, and you've said that the split can happen at different spots, then what i've done in precisely the same circumstances is to capture all the way through once with the gaps, then go back and recapture each gap from a few seconds before to a few seconds after. Drop these tiny captures on top of the first set of captures, sync them, and butt them together. That will fill in the gaps.

Thank you for your info. I have done what you suggest by re capture and overlay on time line. There is a gap. It is frustrating.

what is enable dv scene detection

It detects breaks in the date/time code on the tape. The upshot is, with that on, every time you pause or stop the camcorder while recording, VidCap will create a new file for each.

would it make a difference if transfer camera clock not set?

I transfer video to computer using a different camera. Panasonic DV camcorder.Could be the reason, I have tapes recorded on a JVC that must be played back from that cam. If I use the tape in another cam to capture via firewire I have some problems. So I have to use the original cam to also download to the computer.

How is your disk formatted? If it is ntfs, then indeed it is strange. But if it is FAT32, then there is a file size limit of 4 GB. 1 Hour of dv equals 13 GB, so that could explain the split.

ntfs

This happens sometimes in different places on tape.I guess you don't have access to the original cam the tape was recorded in.

Yes I do but it has split with it also. I don't use it to transfer to save wear.

My guess is scene detection is enabled, there is a dropout in the playback of the tape, and the scene detection decides to start a new clip after the dropout.

Did you ever determine if you have scene detection enabled? It should be under the preferences for the video capture application.

Yes it was and now I have it disabled. Like I say I can't re create split in same place, it happens when it wants to. I got around it by doing what Chienworks told me. I never had a problem until I got my sony vx-2100 camera. One other question. Does it matter if I have Vegas movie studio 4 and movie studio 8 on my computer?
Thanks everyone for help!
