Tascam FW1082 w/Vegas. Moving Faders?

BelaDProducer wrote on 4/17/2008, 5:35 PM
Can any confirm that this feature is supported? I am able to do all features of the 1082 within Vegas except see moving faders – no matter what automation settings I've selected on the audio track. If I click and hold the tracks volume slider and move it via the mouse, the 1082 fader will move in sync with my drag but not on it’s own.

Master fader will move but not 1-8.

I will assume that you have the1082 in the right Mackie Emulation mode.

The automation state of a track or bus does not control whether the MCU displays automation data. In order for the MCU device - in your case the 1082 - to respond to automation moves you must place the MCU into automation mode.

I do not have a 1082 here, but you need to find an available function key on the surface and assign it to toggle automation mode on and off.

This is done in the configuration dialog for the MCU driver that is used with your 1082.

Interesting Peter.

I swear that when I first set it all up, I had seen the faders move but they have not since. The only mode that I have read about that may turn the faders off is called, "Flip". This is when the faders can control pan but I have gone in and out of that mode and still no movement. Plus, if you touch the faders, you can see the virtual fader in Vegas move, etc. I'll keep plugging away at this. It should work - everything else does.

Thank you for replying!

Best,
Francis

ps. The only mode I know to use is what was stated here...

Though other modes seem to work as well. Not all.

What you need to do: (Yes, this is complicated because the 1082 does not provide a true 1:1 mapping for the MCU.)

- Locate an unassigned "Mode" key on the FW-1082. (Those labeld F.Keys.) By default these keys map to the markers in Vegas.)

- Open the Mackie Control configuration dialog in Vegas.

- Locate the "Available host functions:" combo box in this dialog and select "Assign". There should be a single entry labled

"Automation Mode"

With the current mapping labled "Automation", which is the actual button on a real MCU that this control is mapped to. Select this item with your mouse (Single left click)

- In the "User defined surface control mappings" list, locate the Marker 1/9 (This is the default mapping of F1 on the MCU) key you want to assign to toggle Automation mode on and off from the FW1082. Select it (left click)

- Click the "Clear" button. THis will unassign the F1 key to the first marker.

- Click the "Assign" button. This will reassign the F1 key to toggle automation on the 1082.

Note this is how it is suppose to work. We do not have the FW1082 in house so I am making the assumption that the function keys on the 1082 correctly send out msgs as a real MCU does. You may have to hold a modifier key on the Tascam unit or map another key on the 1082.

Yes!! It worked! I cannot thank you enough, Peter. I wish to suggest that Sony add your outstanding setup instructions to their knowledge base.

Thank you again,

ps. I should mention that I was not able to locate, "Assign" via the drop down menu in Vegas 6.0. It was present in Vegas 8.0. Time to upgrade ;)

Dear Peter,

I returned the Tascam unit and now have the MAudio Project Mix. I am having the same issue. I tried your setup but cannot seem to find a F key to assign. Do you know this unit?

Thank you, Sir!

The only key I could assign was stop ;) Not he best choice, mate but it does work well. Looking forward to your insight.

If you search through past posts you'l find that the trick with the ProjectMix is to use it in the mode that is intended to be used with Logic.

In the Logic mode, the functions you need for Vegas are already assigned to the buttons on the ProjectMix. In particular, Automation is mapped to te "Sel In" button.

There is a great YouTube video showing how to connect up the ProjectMixI/O with Sony Vegas in Cubase mode (Aux2) , instead of Logic mode (Aux3). Vegas seems to work with either. MarkWWW, can you point me to the post on using it in Logic mode?

In either mode, I'm having trouble figuring out how to get Vegas to record track automation from the faders on the ProjectMixI/O. I just got the device yesterday and can't figure it out. Any suggestions?

The thread to look at is this one.

To record automation you will need to use the "sel in" button on the ProjectMix when in Logic mode as this is mapped to the MIDI message ("D5") that Vegas needs to change into Automation mode. You won't be able to record automationif you use the ProjectMix in Cubase mode as this mode does not have any buttom mapped to the command needed to put Vegas into Automation Mode.
