Temp File Question using Copy and Trim

I work as the IT director in a large organization where many people share a production room computer with Vegas 4.0 and SoundForge 6.0. For several reasons, the we are not able to setup individual accounts for people on the machines so the machine is just logged in with a master account.

We are constantly having problem with people that create new audio tracks in Vegas, but when they save their project in their folder, they don't check the "copy and trim" option so all of their audio tracks get saved into the same folder. About once a week, we have to go into the specified Vegas temp folder and clean out all of the files because the disk is full. (The folder they should be saving to is on a network drive)

My question is, is there a way to make the copy and trim default to ON instead of OFF? We're not so much interested in the trimming, just the copying so that all of the files associated with a project end up where the project is and aren't left in the temp folder.

As a related question, when someone creates a new audio track, I believe Vegas 3 or 2 used to ask what you wanted to name the track. Vegas 4 doesn't seem to do this unless I'm missing something. Anyone know how to force a dialog to pop up to ask for a name for the track instead of naming them "Track 7 blah blah blah.wav?"

And another related question, if I WAS able to integrate individual logins for each person, could I easily setup Vegas to always write its temp files to a person's home directory so when they hit their quota on the network, they have to clean out their own files instead of filling up the local drive?

Thanks ahead of time!

I'm not sure if you can make the copy and trim function default to on.
Vegas dosen't write recorded files to the temp folder it writes them to the recorded files folder in the project properties. This folder can be changed. To set up a new default folder just click on the "start all new projects with these settings" button and apply.

If you could get people to set up up their project properties to point the "recorded files folder" to their folder, Vegas would write the recorded tracks there instead.

What if you changed the default "recorded files folder" to the network drive?

In fact in a new project, Vegas asks for the recorded files path for the project when you first arm a track or hit record, unless that's been turned off. If that's been turned off I'm not sure what can get it back. Maybe "default all" in prefrences- Nope just checked - here we go. Hold control and shift (or is it just shift?) while you open vegas and it restores all defaults and dialogs. After doing this, you may need to resetup your prefrences.

After recording Vegas should have a popup come up to ask if you want to keep the files. You can rename them there. Make sure that "prompt to keep files after recording" is checked in prefrences.
If you type in a name on the track in the track view (just double click in the grey area right of the track number) the recorded files will automaticaly take that name.

hope this helps.

I would also suggest that you educate your users in the importance of proper project management up front. Before even starting a new project each user should create a folder specific for that project and make it their responsibility that they store all files related to that project in that folder. They may balk at first, but spending a few extra seconds when starting a project and recording will save tons of time and aggravation later on.

One reason to avoid the "copy and trim" function is that it will save all files as .w64 instead of .wav. This may or may not be an issue if you remain inside Vegas & Sound Forge. If you use other software from time to time this can be a problem.

Right. The recorded files folder was what I meant.

Yes, we do have prompt to keep files after recording turned on, but that dialog that you're talking about must be disabled. I'll give your suggestion of resetting the dialogs a shot.

Thanks!

As far as "copy and trim" saving files as .wav64, at least in Vegas 4 this is only true when you select "create trimmed copies of source media". If you select "copy source Media" it saves them as .wav files.
Is this different in 5 and 6? I always want my original source material, so I never trim, just copy.

Copy/trim (in Vegas 4,5,6) writes a new file as .wav64

Copy makes a dupe of the original source media, no rendering or change of format.
