Temp playback freezes in VV 3.0LE

When playing back DV files in either the Trimmer or the timeline, Vegas Video 3.0 LE intermittently freezes for about 20-30 seconds. This happens regardless of whether I'm using the MS, Sonic Foundry or Canopus codecs. I've tried reducing Playback quality to "Draft," as well as going through all the Win2K tweaks suggested at www.videoguys.com. Any suggestions for clearing this up, so I can play files normally?

Here are my system specs:
Win2k SP-2;
ECS K7S5A /Athlon XP 1800+
512MB DDR2100;
ATI Radeon VE dual-head;
ADS Pyro OHCI firewire card;
Canopus DV Raptor 2.11;
120gb Western Digital (8MB buffer)drive in Pyro Drive Kit;
40gb EIDE preview;
40GB boot;
Pioneer A04

Thanks in advance.

Maybe a conflict with Raptor? You might try uninstalling it and test.

There's a known problem with newer firewire drives. In my case I had to install the drives to removable internal bays. This may not be your problem though as usually if you don't stop playback after a freeze VV3 will kick up an 'unable to mix audio' error.

That sounds like it. Letting it sit for about 1 minute or so after a freeze, I get the error message you describe.

Any fix for this in sight? Since I'm sharing the firewire drive with a laptop, putting the drive in a caddy doesn't work for me.

Someone posted a few days ago they've had better luck with USB2. About the same price. You can also fit a drive bay into the ADS case so you can still use it with the laptop.
