I have been curious to see if Firewire 800 is going to be alot faster than Firewire 400.... I took an 8.9 Gig video file and transferred the file to each type of drive. I used a digital stopwatch (so I am sure I am within plus or minus 1 or 2 seconds) to time how long each took to complete the transfer.

The results:

The FW800 Drive: 4 minutes 19 seconds
The FW400 Drive: 6 minutes 03 seconds

You would have to decide for yourself! Not bad ..and the drives are not that much more...just purchased a 200 Gig FW800 drive for $315 and the PCI adapter card was $68 for a 3 port. The drive came with several cables including a FW800 to FW400 cable for other drives to connect to the new PCI adapter.

I think there are other advantages as well. For instance, you can have much, much longe cable runs. That ought to mean you can more easiliy send the digital signal to an engineer when you're on set.
