Text and Lower 3rds

I am trying to create some lower thirds for an upcoming project. Since I have not used lower thirds and a lot of text on videos, I have some questions.

I'm thinking that the term "lower thirds" is just that and not an accurate description of the size, or is it? I tested on one that was 160 pixels tall (an actual third of the height) and it seems too big. What is the typical height for a lower third @ 720x480 (NTSC DV) or is it merely subjective?

Also, I have read on here, and possibly the DVDA section, that the text tool in Vegas is not that great. I can't see where it is that bad. Or is it that I just don't know what to look for?

Test Sample

intel i-4790k / Asus Z97 Pro / 32GB Crucial RAM / Nvidia GTX 560Ti / 500GB Samsung SSD / 256 GB Samsung SSD / 2-WDC 4TB Black HDD's / 2-WDC 1TB HDD's / 2-HP 23" Monitors / Various MIDI gear, controllers and audio interfaces

For the text you have in there, that third is just a bit large, but it's quite usable. There is no set rule to height or width of a lower third/name board. Some are huge, others are tiny. Some completely support the text, others don't.

Here are some examples of lower thirds in Vegas, and here are some examples of how to make lower thirds in Vegas and other apps.
Have a look at Digital Juice' site, and other lower third-pay sites for more examples of what you can do, how to size them, and inspiration for lower third styles.
