Text Between Action? How DO they do that?

Last night, on BBC2, I saw a sequence shot in a War Torn country. A rock throwing individual was seen to throw a rock at some very large text - indiv was infront of text - and the rock thrown went through the "A" of say WAR and then was seen to hit a car on the other side of the text .. . wow! . . .

Any ideas? . . TIA . . .

Hi Grazie!
My first thought is to shoot the scene (tripod) with the stone thrower action and without. Then let Vegas handle it from there.
BTW - take a look at Fall (1.6 MB) , the opening of a film never made. There is a letter trick in there.

using vegas 5 track motion and bezier function; start with tr1 with video, tr2 with text, tr3 with video, tr1=tr3. on tr1, mask out the rock, blockout everything else, at the point after passing the half the "A", then mask out the rock too.

Or put a snapshot of the video with rock close to the "A", put on tr1, text on tr2. and video on tr3. use photohshop or vegas bezier and remove everything but the rock. use pan and crop to move rock thru "A" , at the point of the outside line of the "A" , crop out the rock.

I think Discreet has this down pat, down here we have some nice looking text on the local TV that 'sits' on say an athletics track marking the distance, but as the camera tracks around the field the text stays locked in correct perspective.
I'm certain with a huge amount of fiddling this could be done in Vegas but seeing as how after all the excitment over 2D planar surfaces they are still only 2D, what a waste of development hours.
