I want to produce a text effect so that it slides in from one side, bumps into the edge of a photo, squish (squash) up and then go back to it's noral size.
Trouble is, I am unsur howto go about achieving this.
Write it in Vegas text generator. Position it - say - left centre and format it flush left.
Use Pan/crop and keyframes to move it in from the right. At the stop point, use text generator properties to squeeze/unsqueeze it.
I have not tried, but it ought to stay flush left, therefore you should have your effect, simply and efficiently. If the squeeze draws the text towards its centre instead of its left, you must compensate with pan/crop.

I think that swishmax has this effect built in. Vasst has a tutorial on it by john rofrano called something along the lines of typewriter effect. You can try out swishmax for 30 days free I believe. The text effect that the tutorial shows can be substituted with any that are presets in swishmax. I have grown to like swishmax a lot since utilizing John's simple tutorial.
I've just made that very effect and can confirm the method suggested except that you would have to use compress horisontally.
The text compresses to the center of the text no matter what you have for justification - e.g. left, center or right. This goes for Vegas 6 as well as 7.
Takes a bit of fiddling but it works.
I made two bits of text follow each other as cars would do. First bit stopped and second bit "crashed" into the back of the other.
Had the text vibrate slightly by using the film effect "jitter".
I mentioned text originally, but now it seems that it is a graphic that needs to be done. But there is an added complication.
I have been playing around with Track Motion & Pan/crop. The graphic needs to move swiftly to the left, then the left-most fifth remains stationary but the remainder squashes up then returns to normal.
Moving the graphic is simple, of course, but getting only part to squash is casuing a headache.
I cut the graphic into two parts using a photo editor add the part that doesn't require squashing on one track. Lining it all up is not easy. I will perserver.
To get something that has any sort of "elastic" feel to it as it hits, I think you are definitely going to need something a lot more sophisticated than Vegas. To really pull of the effect, the text needs to not only expand and contract, but also "bulge" and maybe "hop" a little bit, both in the Y and also Z axis. I don't use this software so I don't know what to recommend, but I really don't think you'll get a very satisfying result just using Vegas.
pixel stretch , a free plugin by a genius named Satish will do I think what ya want,, got it and use it and love it ,but can't remember where to download it,, maybe someone will give you a link
good luck
I decided to give WinMorph a try and downloaded it.
When I went to extract the VegasPatch I could not see where the wmmporph.dll file was so did a search and found it in the folder:
C:\Program Files\Sonic Foundry\Vegas 3.0\Video Plug-Ins
This seems strange to me as I only upgraded to XP mid-last year and, ISTR, I installed Vegas 5 only and not Vegas 3.
Are the Sonic Foundry folders still auto-created when installing V5 and will everything work OK if I install the patch to the above folder.
I'll throw my 2 cents in with John -- Vegas is great, but I think more specialized software would make a difference. There are a bunch of text modeling apps for every budget, & if a trial will work in this case, might check out the Boris downloads.
For the background deformation I think the higher end way to do it would be skin a plane or box and deform it. In 2d I think you can either work with morphing deformed stills or using software that emulates 3d effects in 2d -- Wax has a few I think but there are others. You might be able to use the built-in pinch/punch filters.
