Text instead of thumbnails?

Is there any way to have text instead of thumbnails on the clips located on a track?
I’ve got so many clips on the track with identical thumbs - I have a hard time not mixing them up.
Just a simple line of text on the clip identifying it would be great. Any way to do that?

There's a General Preference "Show active take info in Events" which will add the name of each clip, plus other very useful info such as camera timecode.

This is independent of whether the thumbnails are displayed - if you disable these, you will also lose the audio waveform.
