Text not moving with video

salsamac wrote on 1/4/2009, 11:27 AM
Sorry for lack of better terminology, but ; i.e. I copy a portion of video and paste to the beginning, the video and audio that is there move forward, but the text remains, how can I get the text to lock with the video (which I think should be done automatically, it just makes sense) so when the video moves the text follows it?
thanks

The text is on a different video track. Bascially it is a seperate event from the video. To copy text, select it when you when select the video (either hold CTRL or SHIFT down while selecting). Then you can paste all of the events someplace else.

If you are talking about moving events on the timeline and wanting them to move together, you can highlight all the events you want to move and then (G)roup them. They will then move together. You can hit U to ungroup them when you wish.

Auto-ripple can also be extremely useful and friendly for these situations.

So is the audio, and it moves.

I don't want to copy text, I want the text to move over the same way the audio and video do when I paste something before them. i.e. again: I copy a section from measure 40 to 50 and paste it at measur 1. Vid and aud move but text remains. All the text is not joined so if I move the beginning it just runs into the other parts and begin to crossfade into each other.

The audio and video are automatically "grouped", you need to add the text to the group. As Terry pointed out earlier, hold down the CTRL key, click on the video, audio and the text events, release the CTRL key and hit the "G" key. This will group the text with the video and audio and they will now move together. Further explanation of grouping is conveniently located in the Vegas documentation or Help file. RTFM

John Cline gave you the answer then. But if the audio is synced wth the video, it is not a seperate event. It was created at the same time as the video. Titles are created seperately and appear in the Assets folder as a unique element. So you have to either GROUP them with the video or CTRL select with other elements so they are temporarily groupped when moving or copying.

Do any of you know how to unsync the audio from the video? There used to be a button in vegas 6 but I just upgraded and I cant seem to find it in 8.1

Salsa, if I understand you right, you have to turn on Auto ripple:

1. Click the Auto ripple icon on the Tool bar
2. Click the little arrow next to the Auto ripple icon and choose All tracks, Markers and Regions.
3. Copy and Paste the Video (and audio) event(s).

Ungroup it or click the "Ignore Event Grouping" icon (assuming it's still in 8.1).

"...unsync audio from video..."

Highlight both events and press the "u" key.

Using Auto Ripple can cause strange things to happen if your not very sure of what you're doing. It's handy to use for certain things, but then don't forget to turn it off or it can burn you.

The suggestions you got regarding grouping the text event to the video/audio event is the way to go. Or if you don't want to group them, just move them as a group by highlighting them all and dragging.

*earlier, hold down the CTRL key, click on the video, audio and the text events*

A loop is being formed, Are you saying I can't highlight all those different text events in one click?
Is there a way to post images here? So you can see what's going on?

If a loop is being formed then you're holding down the mouse button while dragging. The editing cursor creates a loop. If you want to select a group of events with a mouse drag then you have to switch to the selection cursor instead. The cursor selection buttons are in the toolbar. The one that looks like a pointer inside a dashed square is for selecting.

And the answer is: Edit/Paste Insert .
After finally RTFM on edit and paste.
Thanks all.
